In Device Manager, under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, right click on the USB (if you can't identify the problem USB, do them all, one at a time) and check Properties, then under the Power Management card, untick the "Allow The Computer To Turn Off This Device To Save Power".

Okay, all sorted. Thanks to Megahertz for the info about reagentc I was able to create a windows 10 recovery partition using the reagentc /enable command and the update to 11 worked. I now have 11 as a 10 update, and a clean install 11 as dual boot. I will delete the clean install in due course...

What about letting Windows 10 update to 11 (windows update says it's ready to go) and if all works, and it boots to the "new" windows 11, then I delete (D:) Would that work? I'm concerned that if the update to 11 fails for some reason, I might have an unbootable computer.

I'm not sure what I'm looking for here, but it doesn't seem positive.

Sounds like the USB may not be bootable. Can you check it on another PC?

Worked like a charm! I downloaded Rufus Beta from the link in #1 above, downloaded the official Windows 11 release version 22000.194 ISO, and created a bootable USB for my MBR, no TPM, no secure boot PC, and it installed without a hitch. So much easier than the other methods which make you jump...

Interesting that Microsoft "recommend" reverting to Win10, rather than saying you have to. Is this a sign of softening on the hardware requirements?

If you install Easybcd, you can adjust the waiting time for choosing which system you want. I set mine at 10 seconds, and if I do nothing, it loads the system I have set as default.
