Hi folks

the old monolithic libvirtd virtual machine service is replaced by default in the latest releases. The doc here specifies LEAP but it's the same in Tumbleweed (the rolling release).

Currently that means you have to use the virtual machine manager as an admin user. The old method doesn't apply --- documentation on the net is often hideously out of date these days.

I haven't a solution yet but I'm sure one will appear. However you'll get prompted for root password at starting the GUI - no big deal if you are an individual user at home just trying out this stuff.

Cheers

Hi folks
got the answer -- just go to /etc/libvirt/v*

i.e all those things that start in v* and end in .conf.

Any of the files that have on about line 8 -- unix socket access controls

then uncomment unix_sock_group -- which will be libvirt
and uncomment unix_sock_rw_perms

Then add yourself to group libvirt.

Probably easier then to re-boot rather than find out which actual service needs re-starting. You probably don't need to alter all those conf files but it doesn't seem to have done me any harm.

I suppose that's always the danger of using "bleeding edge" software - but often it's worth it just for performance.

(Another issue -- not relevant to this post - but worth mentioning for people wanting to try out phpmyadmin)

The default install doesn't install the phpmyadmin database so you can't configure the storage.

Simply download the create_tables.sql from the phpmyadmin website (extract from the zip file) and then run the file after logging in to mariadb - use the source command (source <filename.sql>. No need to create the database -= the script will do it.

reboot -- then all works fine.

apart from these 2 niggles I'm happy with this tumbleweed version of Opensuse -- seems legendary "Teutonic efficiency" is working as expected -- but their documentation leaves a "bit to be desired". Perhaps I should invoice them for a few €'s !!!!.

Still hideous weather (3 deg C with possible snow later) and nothing much to do today -- papers also to hideous to read --where everybody seems to be bent on killing each other so quite happy to be wrestling with this stuff.

(Fixing it on a HOST PC -- it makes my Windows 11 Enterprise system really perform well -- almost at native speed -- amazing for outside Europe a relatively unknown Linux Distro).

Added -- the standard install also sets up Bridged networking without any problems automatically so Hot / Guest communication is no problem -- which is not the case if using NAT networking.

Cheers
