  1. Solved Is my winre.wim the latest?

I also suspect that it injects drivers into the recovery image but apparently certain conditions must be met which are unknown. I deleted all OEM drivers from my image as a test and ran it. It did not add any drivers back into the recovery image. It could be a combination of switches that is...
  2. Solved Is my winre.wim the latest?

If your WinRE image is outdated, it is probably because the recovery partition is too small. I started noticing this issue on Windows 10/Server 2019 devices but now more and more on Windows 11 devices too, now that I know what to look for. I It is easy to miss this issue in the first place in...
  3. All screens go black when one is turned on or off

This seems like another thing for which there is no fix. I believe the BIOS, which brings its own GPU driver (GOP - Graphics Output Protocol - driver), decides which monitor/port is used for the POST screen and you can't change that.
  4. All screens go black when one is turned on or off

What the title says, but let me explain why this is annoying: My current setup is: Nvidia GPU (RTX 3070) 2 monitors attached on my desk The 3rd monitor is the TV attached with an HDMI cable The TV does not get output most of the time (System \ Display \ "Disconnect this display") Occasionally...
  5. Kernel-Mode Hardware-enforced Stack Protection suddenly off?

Same here. I just found this today. What I always wonder about these security features is, if it will break any games, especially older games. Last summer, I used to be able to play Mass Effect trilogy on my computer. It ran perfectly fine. Now, it crashes with "radar pre leak" errors. Don't...
  6. Solved Heads up: Before you update your BIOS

Hi, I just want to follow up on this: Today I did another BIOS update and I loaded the default BIOS settings and Windows did not ask for the password. Then, I did a full CMOS reset (with a screwdriver). Even then, Windows did not ask for the password and it seems the TPM (Intel CPU integrated)...
  7. Solved Heads up: Before you update your BIOS

I will update the first post accordingly. I will also mark it as solved as there doesn't seem to be a 'solution' to this. It just seems to be like this by design. It is also not well understood why it happens to some but not to others. edit: It seems like I can't edit the first post anymore.
  8. Solved Heads up: Before you update your BIOS

Because Windows won't boot without the BitLocker pin/password. Also, if they use a thumb drive to boot from (or remove the disk and put it in another computer), they still wouldn't be able to see the contents of the hard drive because it is encrypted. edit: I should add: BitLocker can also run...
  9. Solved Heads up: Before you update your BIOS

To be fair, the TPM concept seems fairly secure and work as intended overall. An attacker with physical access to the computer can always reset the TPM of course but not 'hack' into the TPM and read out the encryption keys stored in it. For instance, if BitLocker is used and it is backed up by...
  10. Solved Heads up: Before you update your BIOS

It didn't turn off the TPM. I did load the default/optimized defaults after flashing the BIOS, as I always do and then change the settings back to what I need them to be. But this is a fairly new mainboard (Gigabyte Z690 Elite) and it is Win 11 compatible by default and it never turns off the...
  11. Solved Heads up: Before you update your BIOS

Apparently this is known, but it was news to me, so here goes: Before you update the BIOS, if you use a pin to login to Windows (with a Microsoft account). Have your account password ready! Make sure you have access to the alternative email stored in your Microsoft account You will need it...
  12. Windows to go -- so easy to create now

This has been in Rufus for many years. Also, this might be a distinction without a difference but I did some research on Windows To Go a while ago, I believe that the makers of Rufus confuse WTG with Native Boot, as WTG is dead according to MSFT. It was removed from Windows 10 with build 2004...
  13. Performance on physical VHDX vs Native HDD (SSD) - NOT VM

I haven't tried it yet. My computer had a regular Win 10 installation and another Win 10 installation with native VHD boot. Now my main OS is upgraded to Win 11 but the VHD OS is still on Win 10. How can I upgrade Windows in the VHD? Boot it as a virtual machine, or can this be done natively?
  14. Gaming on Windows 11

Far Cry 6. Pretty smooth considering that it has yet to receive its first patch. Crashed 2-3 times in 52 hours played. Probably not Win 11 related. I'm waiting for the first Direct Storage game. Any news on that?
