I had the same problem and have figured out how to fix it. If you are worried back up your registry. Regedit HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and go to the item that is missing. (e.g. .docx) Delete the whole key. That is .docx and everything in it. Run the Quick repair on Office. Restart the computer.
