I had a similar case with an external USB HDD having fluctuating speeds when copying large files. It would read/write at full speed (ca. 70-110 MB/s) and then die to 0 for few seconds. Than again full copying speed and 0 and this roller-coaster of transfer speed would continue. Oddly enough this...
