A Notepad++ replacement, With a tree? structure

On a Win11 (24H2) desktop PC, the free Notepad++ is great, and it handles Large files.
However, I would like a Tree? or Folder? structure, like:

Animals ﹀
_____Dogs >
_____Cats ﹀
__________Barney >
__________Fluffy >
_____Horses ﹀
__________Trigger >
_____Goats >

Would be really nice if the app could include JPG pictures (and maybe even other file types) in the flow.
Do you know of such an app?

Curious as to why? Npp "file open" give you exactly that, but the Windows version.
When it's provided by the OS, why build one into an app?

Have you looked in to there being a npp plugin?
If not, maybe write one?

I AM using the Windows version, and
in Npp, I just tried: File > Open > some JPG file > and it opened the (machine language? unprintable) version of that JPG picture in another tab.
Nope, haven't looked for a plugin, and cannot program one.
I'm assuming that a Different app is needed.

Hi, Mark, welcome

It’s a notepad not a word processor.
Can I suggest Microsoft Word. Closest I can think of that will be able to do what you want. (Less a html editor)
The tree structure could be complicated in Word but from memory it is possaible.

Text editors do not handle many formats of files, have been used for years for coding of programs and basic HTML coding as they do not add hidden formatting. They do not handle images directly, even a word processor like Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, Lotus WordPro or LibreOffice may not open an image file, but that file can be Inserted into a document.

Yes, AntsPants, MS Word allows JPG files to be inserted, but HOW to make the Tree structure?
For this purpose, I don't need any HTML editor.

If you want to use tabs to build your tree I think Wordpad will do it. Though its been removed from Windows 11 you can still use it.
I use it as a portable app. I have it in my Onedrive if you want to try it, download it below. Download and Unzip the folder. Keep the unzipped folder intact and put it anywhere on your computer. DO NOT REMOVE ANY OF THE FILES IN THE FOLDER. Click on Wordpad.exe to open. (You can make a shortcut to wordpad.exe and put on your desktop. You can then pin it to your taskbar or start menu.)

If you decide to keep it you need to change your file association. Go to settings>apps>default apps.
Scroll to bottom and select "change defaults by file type"
Find .rtf in the list and click on it.
From the list that pops up scroll down and select "choose an app on your PC" Browse to folder where wordpad.exe is and select wordpad.exe
click set default

If you want to produce formatted documents from Notepad++ then use Markdown. There are plugins to refer it.
If you want a tree structured document, have a look at mempad Horst Schaeffer's Software Pages
Alternatively, investigate note taking applications. I use Joplin, but I haven't investigated alternatives very thoroughly.

Try TreePad Lite which is basic but good with a small program size. This is no longer in development. The developer died several years ago now. I have a licenced version of TreePad Business Edition which by a huge margin is my most used word processor/note taker, the tree structure is fantastic once you get used to the concept. I use it daily and it is very, very good. Unfortunately it is no longer possible to buy a licence for it. Though it can be downloaded for trial purposes if you're curious enough to want to look. You can try CherryTree which, in comparison to TreePad, is a bloated monster but it does seem reasonably popular.

Obsidian should be able to do that, i think: Obsidian - Sharpen your thinking

It's a modern "sort of text editing tool - that's highly customizable to all kinds of specific needs".


I'm aware it can use image too - similar to a word editor (you just have to - drag & drop the image").

AS already mentioned, that's because npp is a PLAIN TEXT editor NOT an image editor or viewer.
I'm still not sure why you need a tree structure INSIDE an editor when you have that provided by Windows.
That said, if you want to build a "tree" inside a document that contains embedded images such as jpg or png and/or other embedded object types, then as suggested - perhaps MS Word would be what you need as it will show a tree structure.
