Microsoft Windows 11 Pro 64-bit 22631 Multiprocessor Free
Windows 11 Pro, 24H2
FireTV Stick
ASUS Router RT-AC3100

Below are my goals.

1. Copy video files to a USB drive.
2. Connect this USB to my router.
3. Access this USB from my computer.
4. Play (access) the USB drive videos on my FireTV.
The FireTV Stick has a media players.

Any safe and reliable method to achieve this?

I don't know about the FireTV stick, but I do know about sharing a USB from a router. I have a 2TB USB HDD plugged into the back of mine, which I can uses as a network drive from any of my PCs.

What you need to know is that most (if not all) ISP-supplied routers that have a USB port only support the SMB1 protocol. To be able to access the shared USB you will need to turn on the 'SMB 1.0/CIFS Client' in 'Turn Windows features on or off'. You do not need the Server, just the Client.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

The USB AiDisk access process or “Media Server” settings in ASUS Routers is hit and miss. Every attempt to use it, for me, has been a miss.

In the past I have been able to gain access but when trying to view files in the USB drive, they disapear. There are a few methonds you can try

Be warned, the ASUS Router interface has a few ways to access a USB drive on your network. Like I said, for me they all fail at somepoint.

Backup your router settings before you proceed.

I find PLEX Media Server to be so much better. It’s in my top 5 fav apps for Windows.

Bit of a learning curve and it requires that the PC that houses the media Files be on (hence the server part) But I can access my media on any device on my network, iPad, TV, PC’s etc.
You can also setup remote access if you decide to visit the Moon or Pluto, Jupiter (Mars?) and want access to your media when away. (Because those planets are overrated and apparently boring)
However I have not tried this. My spaceship is broken.

^^^this^^^^works great. Download and Set up Plex on one of your systems, point its library location to be the networked usb drive. Give Plex time to build its library of your movies. Install Plex app on fire stick. Open Plex app through fire stick and pick a movie. Lots of free movies on Plex too. Works not only with movies, but a music collection as well.

I forgot to tell the OP that whatever system you set up as your Plex server has to be on while you are watching your stored movies using the Plex app on your firestick.

I used to use Plex also, until they bloated it with too much needless junk, which in turn became a memory hog and glitches.
Switched to Emby media server and never looked back.
Does the exact same thing as Plex but runs so much better.
