I have an ASUS Scar 18 (2024) laptop that comes with a VESA DisplayHDR-1000 screen. I will first layout some facts that I have observed.
There are three settings that affect the brightness of HDR content:
1) The default Windows brightness setting
2) The values I set in HDR Calibration
3) The HDR content brightness slider (No, it's not SDR content brightness slider. Laptops have HDR content slider, while desktops have SDR content slider.)
There are two settings that affect the brightness of SDR content (like desktop or browser):
1) The default Windows brightness setting
2) The values I set in HDR Calibration
-------------------------------------------------------
Why do the values in HDR Calibration affect SDR content? I don't know, but it does and it has some very unexpected results.
Here are the three stages of HDR Calibration:

The second stage, at least by name, seems like it affects the maximum brightness of the screen. But whenever I adjust the slider to the left (ie. darker) and applies the ICC profile, my desktop becomes brighter. If I adjust the slider to the right (ie. brighter), my desktop becomes darker. In short, the greater the maximum luminance, the darker my SDR content becomes.
I am looking for someone that can explain this behavior, as well as detail how proper HDR calibration should be done on a laptop screen, when there are three settings that affect the brightness of HDR content.
