Solved Asus Ai-Disk files disappear on refresh

Halo.

Thanks again for your patience. I have always failed at anything to do with Networking.

I have an Asus DSL-AX82U. I thought I'd give an external drive attached to the router a go because I am sick of copying files to a USB stick and walking it all over the house from PC to PC (Computer sharing has never worked for me, not following any tutorial from here or 10 forums)

Anyway... I followed this guide from ASUS: ASUS Router - AiDisk

Everything worked, I can see the drive, I can copy a file to it via the ftp address 192.168.50.1
But even so much as going to another explorer window, or refreshing the actual ftp window, the files vanish.
I can't understand why. Step by step I followed that tute.
Any guesses?

Honestly, I'm good at other things, like swearing and throwing stuff at other stuff.

I can also connect via the internet address I created, via an ftp program. Connects fine, still no coppied files visable.

It's a 1TB Seagate External formatted to NTFS. No power supply needed. It falls within the acceptable hardware for this router.
The drive works directly plugged into my computer/laptop. It's deleting the files. Trend Micro Antivirus is off within the router.

I can only show how I set it up with a TP-Link router. Searched for how to on the router and got this.

This is the address I get from the router,

\\Archer_VR900\volume(sda2)

Right click This PC and select Map a network drive.

(Info from router \\Archer_VR900 and add \volume(sda2))

I find it easier if you create a simple password as sometimes it will show drive as inaccessible for some reason then you will have to disconnect and Map it again to input the name (admin) and password. Doesn't happen very often though.
Don't know if my ramblings help but might give you a bit of a clue.

I'll have a run through of that tomorrow and I'll put together another External using a QVO 1TB & an external case. Just ordered it. I've never liked these Seagate externals. I'll blame the tool for now. After which point I may end up being the tool.

So on further inspection, when I woke this morning and plugged the drive directly into my PC, the files (or some variation of) are visible. So I don't know why they are vanishing from view when connecting via ftp. The connection is marked as admin rights...

Maybe FTP isn't the way to go. I'm using my router as a small NAS in a way. Have a look at doing it this way,

I've really appreciated your help, @Fabler2. Nothing works, I'll stick to email sending and USB transporting. Cheers for all that

Sorry it didn't work out. Took me a few goes and FTP didn't work out for me either.

How about setting the drive up as a Samba share on the router? You’ll have to enable SMB1 if using stock ASUS firmware or install Merlin firmware if you want to use SMB2.

Another option would be an inexpensive NAS such as Synology DS120J.

Thanks for the suggestion, bfunke. I’m pretty good at a lot of things in likfe and generally follow stuff pretty easily when I have time to relax, but for some reason, if it even remotely involves networking, I fail every time. I’ve had a couple of heart attacks which as a result really screwed with my comprehension of things but I can’t blame this on networking, I just suck big time at networking

I’ll sit down at some point soon and jump online with Asus, it’s a new router so I think I get support with it. Maybe they’ll connect and have a look

It is a good idea though, plug and play by the looks. I’ll have a better look at it.

Edit; I found one (DS120J) online for $150 for the enclosure, which is very affordable. I click on the 8th option, its $700 lol
I actually have some 3tb NAS drives that I bought that are laying around somewhere that I replaced as after buying them I decided they were too slow for my pc, it was an accidental purchase. So I’ll consider buying an enclosure and crossing my fingers. But currently, I’m drowning in bills.

Best wishes antspants. Another option is a used NAS. A lot of folks start with a 2 disk model and then upgrade to 4 disk versions. At least in the US used NAS's are cheap. Similarly an old slow computer can be turned into a NAS with free open source TrueNAS software. The learning curve may be a bit steep if you've not dabbled in Linux but there are tutorials online.
