This is a "new" secondhand laptop that I'm having huge trouble customising, but even more trouble connecting to internal network. Been trying for days. (I may be posting for network help in the relevant section... one day, but am so pushed for time right now 😞)

My latest search took me to this video:

...but after creating the new DWORD folder I rechecked the comments and noticed, out of date order, the most recent comment saying that the fix no longer works after the latest update.

I have not done anything whatsoever with the new DWORD folder, it only has zeros in it - can I safely delete it? Or doesn't it matter if I just leave it there?

FIRST backup/export your registry to a safe location.
you can delete the reg key and/or DWORD you created as its not affecting the system in any way.

best of luck, Steve ..

Have you done a clean install?

It was a clean install when I got it, bought from a reputable eBay business seller. So no, I haven't, and I haven't got the time to do one unless you say I'm going to die if I don't.

These words do not really sit together too well for me, and then added too ...

It was a clean install when I got it
Not the sort of thing that I'd rely on. The only clean install is one done by the user, not a benevolent third party

I'm wondering where/why the cause of the network errors are coming from that you need to registry tweek on a so-called "new" second hand computer with an alleged clean install???

I've had more than my fare share of problems with eBay business sellers - but this one's definitely a cut above in all aspects of the sale. I had to use him because Dell wasn't offering the specs I needed (or "wanted" 😜), I did try them first.

The correct terms when talking about items in the Registry are 'Key' for what looks like a folder in the left pane, and 'Value' for the items (DWORD, etc.) in each key. Windows ignores any unrecognised names for values, so it could just be left there, equally it's safe to delete. If in doubt, before making changes right-click on the Key containing the value(s) and export it.

have you tried manual IP configuration for the network connection.
IP address
sub net
gateway address
DNS addressing

then try the network connection.
best of luck, Steve ..
