I am more of a Mac guy. On my Mac, if I make a new Word document, I can go to Insert → Object… → From File…. I will get this:

Whereas in Windows I go to Insert in the ribbon (never liked those), the Text group of icons and choose Object, pulling down the menu and choosing “Object….” This brings up a dialog:

Having chosen the Create from File tab I browse for the file and click OK.

Now my document looks like this:

I did it twice. Once with the Link to file checkbox unchecked, the second time with it checked. In neither case does it look like it does in Word for macOS. What am I doing wrong?

By the way, in Windows I am following the Adobe-recommended procedure.

Are you using the same version of Word in both macOS and Windows? I did when I had a MacBook Pro OS X [before macOS came out]. I have Word 2013 on Win11 and can insert an image made by the Snipping Tool rather than the file itself.

I did not look at the versions. The macOS version is the latest, as it gets updated by the macOS App Store app practically every other week. The Windows version is 16.0.18324.20194.

Thanks very much for demonstrating your workaround. However, I am not looking for a workaround but for a way to genuinely place a PDF file in a Word document, just like I can on my Mac.
