OS
windows 11pro version 23H2
I am having windows 11 pro system. sfc /scannow completed successfully without any error or integrity violation error. the system is slow and so i tried chkdsk /f /r /x in normal windows and also in advanced options in safe mode. after bios logo, i got alert, to skip disk check scheduled and if want to exit within 5seconds, I just left it and computer normally boots to windows without performing chkdsk. I tried in advanced option, and in safe mode, but the result is the same.
I do not know , why this is not working in my windows. for work purpose, i have two monitors attached to one cpu on two available hdmi and display ports of the same brand monitors. I also find it weird that the spare monitor pops up chkdsk message and it does not work. Please give me fix , a quick fix.

Are you running chkdsk as administrator? chkdsk requires running as administrator.

Let's try again. Right click on your command prompt shortcut and open as administrator. Then run chkdsk /r

The "r" switch is all you need. It assumes the "f" switch and the "x" switch won't really work with your system partition. After entering chkdsk /r (ENTER) you'll be asked if you want to run it on the next boot. Say yes and reboot.

Hi, allan, I tried chkdsk /r as admin in cmd. the chkdsk schedule prompt works , but chkdsk command not working. I issued the chkdsk /f/r and chkdsk worked in D:\which is hard disk. C: is in SDD.would not chkdsk not work on SSD.

I don't know what you mean when you say the chkdsk command isn't working. A couple of things:

  • Again, the /f switch is redundant if you use the /r switch. It doesn't do any harm, but it doesn't do any good either.
  • I'm glad to hear it works on the hard drive
  • What EXACTLY happens when you enter the command for c: drive? Does it ask if you want to run it on the next boot? After you say "yes", do you reboot? If so, what happens exactly?
  • The firmware on an SSD marks bad sectors as unusable automatically, so while it's okay to run checkdisk on an ssd, it's also unnecessary.

You say your system is "slow". Please describe EXACTLY what is slow and what your issues are.

The CHKNTFS command can help it displays or modifies the checking of disk at boot time.

Execute CHKNTFS /? to view its help document.

Chkntfs examples

Code:
chkntfs /d

Restores the computer back to the default settings and all drives are checked at boot if they are dirty.

If no switches are specified, CHKNTFS displays if the specified drive is dirty or scheduled to be checked on next reboot.

Hi, allan, it is simple, when chkdsk /r is given, it prompts to schedule it on next boot. But next boot is booting to normal windows. that is the issue

Please boot your computer with Windows Setup Media and from Windows Recovery Environment start the Command Prompt.

Please type below command into Command Prompt and press Enter key.

Following command will fixes errors on the disk and locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.

Code:
Chkdsk C: /r

Please replace partition letter C: with Windows installed partition letter. When the computer boots into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) environment, the drive letter assign to Windows partition may not be C: drive letter because Windows 7, 8 , 8.1, 10 and Windows11 creates a separate system partition when it's installed from scratch. The system partition contains boot files WinRE assigns the system partition the C: drive letter and the Windows installed partition will be assigned any other drive letter, usually D: drive letter is assigned to Windows installed partition. The Bcdedit | find "osdevice" command can be used to find out the drive letter of the Windows installed partition, the output of the Bcdedit command is similar to this osdevice partition=D:. The drive letter after partition= is the drive letter of the Windows partition.
