Clipboard or notepad?

Probably a dumb query but I have read a lot of explanations of the use of the clipboard and notepad. Now I use notepad quite a bit and am confused why there should be such a thing as clipboard. So which is best to use because as I stated I cannot understand what clipboard does better than notepad.

Well, both. They serve different functions. Notepad and similar apps are to manipulate files (mainly plain text) and the clipboard is solely a means to transfer data.
