Copilot is now included in Microsoft 365 Personal and Family

Since we launched Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) to consumers in 2013, we’ve steadily delivered new apps, features, and benefits to our subscribers. These include advanced security with Microsoft Defender, creative tools like Microsoft Clipchamp, and countless enhancements to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook.

We’re building on those 12 years of innovation by bringing Microsoft Copilot and Microsoft Designer to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers in most markets worldwide.1 These changes bring the transformative power of AI to the personal productivity tools that millions of people use every day. Note: these changes only apply to our consumer subscription plans.

The next big step in our Copilot journey​

Our plan has always been to make Copilot in the Microsoft 365 apps more accessible to a wider audience at a great price. We planned several steps in our Copilot journey to listen, learn, and improve usability and performance. In January 2024, we started that journey by launching Microsoft Copilot Pro to our consumer early adopters, learning that access to Copilot in the Microsoft 365 apps is a top reason for subscribing. And in October 2024, we launched a pilot of the changes we’re announcing today in a small set of markets. We’re officially taking the next big step by making Copilot part of our Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriptions. Most of our 84 million consumer subscribers will now have access to Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and the newly renamed Microsoft 365 Copilot app. We’re delighted to empower millions of our customers with an AI assistant that supercharges the productivity apps they already know and love. We’ll continue offering Copilot Pro for consumers with extensive usage needs, along with Microsoft 365 Copilot, our commercial offering, for organizations of all sizes.

Get more out of Microsoft 365 apps with Copilot​

Productivity and creativity are at the heart of Microsoft 365, and with Copilot integration across our apps you’re now equipped with an AI assistant that makes your life easier (and fun). Here are five scenarios to try with Copilot:

• Need help with meal preparation for the week? With Copilot in Word, just enter your dietary preferences and servings, and Copilot will create a polished recipe ready for your kitchen.
  
  

• Looking to update your household budget for the new year? Ask Copilot in Excel to analyze your current budget spreadsheet, offer ideas, and set you off to a great start in 2025.
  
  

• Trying to string together a slideshow of your winter vacation to share with your family and friends? Give Copilot in PowerPoint some details about your vacation and watch it generate the narrative flow, slides, and design, then just add your favorite photos.
  
  

• Facing an email backlog from over the holidays? Don’t sweat it. Copilot in Outlook can summarize lengthy email threads so you can get on with your day.
  
  

• Have a free-form “brain dump” of all the things you want to get done in the new year? Copilot in OneNote can get them organized by summarizing, rewriting, or creating a task list for you.
  
  

Create and edit images with Microsoft Designer​

Furthermore, we’re making our newest app, Microsoft Designer, part of Microsoft 365 Personal and Family by providing subscribers with the opportunity to do more image creation and editing than our free users. In addition to accessing Designer within apps like Word and PowerPoint, you can also use the standalone Designer app on the web and mobile. Use Designer to create eye-catching images by simply describing what you’re looking for or choosing from pre-populated ideas. Plus, expertly edit your photos with AI by erasing unwanted objects with ease. Here are two scenarios to try with Designer:

• Did you capture some holiday memories along with a few holiday distractions? Simply open Designer and upload your photo to edit with AI. You can easily select unwanted objects and watch Designer use AI to remove them from the photo.
  
  

• Capturing your favorite recipes in a recipe book and need to bring them to life? Describe your dish and Copilot in Word will use Designer to create a unique image that complements your recipe.
  
  

Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers will receive a monthly allotment of AI credits to use Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. The credits can also be used for AI image generation and editing in Designer and in other AI-powered apps like Paint, Photos, and Notepad on a device running Windows. The monthly allotment should be enough for most subscribers. For Microsoft 365 Family subscribers, Copilot will be available to the subscription owner and cannot be shared with others. We’re also committed to giving our customers control over their experience and know there are times when AI assistance isn’t desired (like in some academic scenarios), so we’re adding settings in apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint that allow you to disable or enable Copilot as needed.

To reflect the extensive subscription benefits that we’ve added over the past 12 years and enable us to deliver new innovations for years to come, we’re increasing the prices of Microsoft 365 Personal and Family in the US for the first time since its release by $3 USD per month (visit our store to see local pricing). Existing subscribers won’t experience the price increase until their next renewal.

Finally, we understand that our customers have a variety of needs and budgets, so we’re committed to providing options. Existing subscribers with recurring billing enabled with Microsoft can switch to plans without Copilot or AI credits like our Basic plan, or, for a limited time, to new Personal Classic or Family Classic plans. These plans will continue to be maintained as they exist today, but for certain new innovations and features you’ll need a Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscription.

Committed to AI privacy​

We recognize that our customers have questions about AI privacy, including how we train our AI models. Transparency is one of our six responsible AI principles, so we’re sharing more details here. To protect your privacy, we do not use your prompts, responses, or file content (such as Word documents or Excel spreadsheets) when you use Copilot in the Microsoft 365 apps to train our foundation models.

Accessing Copilot in Microsoft 365 Personal and Family​

Existing Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers in most markets will automatically get access to Copilot in their apps once they update to the latest version.
