1. Do a restore from your last good system image. Oh, you do not have one: well start planning to have one in the future.
2. Try a Windows System Restore
3. Try a Windows Update
4. If none of the above do a Windows Reset using the recovery drive or .iso. You will have to re-install all your programs, and make sure your data is saved.

Hi, Paul, welcome 🙏

Please fill out your system specs properly to list the model of your HP Laptop

  • Check to see if you have the latest firmware for your laptop, that all of your HP laptop drivers are up to date. Look for updated keyboard and mouse drivers for your specific laptop.
  • Try clicking on the Function Lock (Fn) key before using the Copilot+ key.
  • Click the Function Lock (Fn) key on & off a few times to see if it gives the Copilot+ key a kick in the right direction.
  • Check the Copilot app to see if the key has been reassigned or disabled.
  • As much as having backups is most important, not having one is OK. We live and learn.

OK, data updated - I try your tips.
Clicking the Copilot+ (with/without shift or ctrl or Fn) always opens the Windows Search window (instead of the Copilot)
In the Copilot app I donot find a setting for assigning/disabling the key - is there?

I found its normal that the key opens the Search window when the copilot app is disabled.
So it leaves the ?: why is it disabled (while i can open the app from the taskbar) and how to enable.

All I was able to find so far, Paul, is the following comment from the Windows blog.

Timing of Copilot feature delivery and availability varies by market and device. Requires Microsoft account to log in. When Copilot for Windows is not available or enabled on the device, pressing the Copilot key will launch Windows Search.

Thanks for all your help, but the mistery stays.
I'd rather remap the useless key to generate my e-mailaddress!

Sorry an answer wasn’t found. There is obviously some weird relationship between Copilot and the key. It, from what I can tell, might very possibly be restricted to having a Microsoft 365 subscription, do you have one, Paul?

I also think there is a relation with microsoft 365, and I dont have a license indeed.
Anyway the copilot app sits on my taskbar, so remapping the key gives more added value.

I used the Keyboard Manager within the Microsoft PowerToys for the remapping to my mailaddress.
Select the copilot key as the shortkey [Shift + Windows key + F23].

If you wanted copilot to launch with its dedicated key, just manually create a shortcut and map it to the key

OK, but in the end I found a better use for the key.
Sacrifying a key just for copilot is a waste.
