Copying 18 GB from 1 NVMe partition to another partition needs over 1 day, but only 3 hours to USB drive

I needed to back up about 18 GB, so I thought that copying from C drive to E drive, both on the NVMe drive would be fastest. Wrongo! :scream: For a while, I was looking at a transfer rate of about 50 kb/sec. Huh? It was much, much faster copying to a USB drive. I can't explain this, so I'm posting this so that people above my pay grade can possible explain it. And the next average Joe like me who has this problem may get some answers.

Copying files from one partition to another on the same drive is not really a back up and does not accomplish much as the file is not protected if you have disk failure.
Personally I do not copy such large files but use backup/imaging software which takes only minutes or Fast Copy.

As to why copying is so slow , I have never encountered it and don't have the answer, but see particularly posts #18 and #19 in this thread. When copying large files to/from NVME drives, CPU spikes and copy performance plummets

Man that is slow!
I can do 130GB in 7 minutes from C: to Wd external HDD.
What version Windows are you on? KB5007262 was a patch to fix slow transfers.
Plus an older update caused issues:

A rollback reportedly fixes this problem for those affected.

I would suspect a problem somewhere in the chain - the drive, the M.2 port, the MB. Try this:

Start a copy once again so that any errors that might get logged are current. Let it run a couple of minutes. Open the event viewer and look at Windows Logs > System. Look for any disk related errors.

EDIT: You might also want to run a chkdsk on both partitions.

Another idea:

In File Explorer, right-click on any drive and select Properties > Tools > Optimize

Select both partitions on the NVMe drive and then click on Optimize. Wait at least a half hour. Start a copy again. Any improvement?

Why? If data was erased and for some reason (a dirty shutdown for example) a TRIM operation was not completed, it can cause the NVMe to perform very slowly eventually. It shouldn't be THAT slow, but it can make a huge difference. Note: Ignore the line that says "x days since last retrim". This is not proof that the TRIM was completed successfully by the drive.

This might be the right tool and solution for you. I always use xcopy when cloning or backing up an SDCard or MicroSDCard and it's fast and flawless with copying files and directories perfectly. For copying folders / directories / paths, and files, it works so well (plus it's quick).

I think this option (xcopy), would work quickly for you and without problems.

I would check disk's health with Crystal Disk Info or Hard Disk Sentinel or other utility. I would also return for replacement under Warranty if still covered.

NVMe drive was purchased early in 2023. Samsung warranty is 3 years, but I have to search all the usual websites to get actual purchase info, in case I need to file a warranty. But it's also possible that I should just wipe the drive, create two partitons, and redo the test.

No need, just visit Samsung support site, find the Warranty Check section and confirm your Warranty using the serial number. Even if you have some months more Warranty according to your purchase receipt, the disk must still have a valid manufacturing Warranty according to manufacture date, it's all you need.

I can recommend FastCopy for big copy jobs. Give it a try.

If the disk is healthy, you should see speeds 150-200MB/sec or higher when copying from one folder of the disk to the other, or from one partition to the other even using File Explorer. If copying is THAT slow as you said on your first post, "There is something rotten in the state of Denmark", as Shakespeare put it.

I don't think upgrading the BIOS is going to make any difference. The symptoms (very slow access) suggest something is wrong with the disk, not the controller. I would first check the disk's health with Hard Disk Sentinel or Crystal Disk Info before doing anything else. Both utilities also have test. Do the quick test first.
