Solved Create Desktop Shortcut for Sleep

I'm trying what I thought would be a very simple task, I'd like a desktop shortcut for sleep.

Note that I want plain "sleep" and not "hibernate". However, even though I've tried a bunch of solutions I find, every one of them appears to actually invoke Hibernate. While that certainly works, it takes a lot longer to wake up, which is what I'm trying to avoid. When the computer sleep timeout occurs, the proper sleep mode is enabled. Also, if I key Win/x, u, s, that also enters the desired sleep mode. Of course, that's a bunch of keystrokes, so I'd just like to have the shortcut.

Here's my Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeout settings. When this kicks in, it accomplishes exactly what I'm trying to do, I just need to figure out how to put this in a desktop shortcut. :)

I hasten to point out, I've found a bunch of different recommendations for commands that "sleep", but every one of them appears to actually invoke "hibernate" instead of sleep.

Maybe these work, with powershell:

Powershell:

# Set screen timeout to 30 minutes
powercfg -change -monitor-timeout-ac 30    # When plugged in
powercfg -change -monitor-timeout-dc 30    # On battery

# Set desktop sleep timeout to 30 minutes
powercfg -change -standby-timeout-ac 30    # When plugged in
powercfg -change -standby-timeout-dc 30    # On battery

You later want some other settings?

I don't want to set the timeout, I want the sleep button to immediately go into sleep mode. I've set the timeout in the configuration, that works perfectly if I allow it to run it's course.

C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0

I even found a nice icon for it....

Edit: Once you've made the shortcut you can also click and drag to pin it to the taskbar.

That invokes hibernate on my machine. That creates about a 30 second delay when starting back up it goes through the entire boot sequence and BIOS delays. I want the plain sleep that just keeps the memory alive but shuts down all other activity. That is accomplished by using the Win/x, u, s key sequence, I want to encapsulate that in a shortcut. With the proper sleep mode, the machine wakes up in a few seconds. I thought this should be simple, but apparently not. :)

I use a shortcut to a .cmd file containing the following:

Batch:

C:\bin\Sysinternals\psshutdown64.exe -d

That program is from the Sysinternals suite. It gives a 20 second delay, but there's a -t parameter that allows you to set a delay in seconds. Presumably, adding "-t 0" would make it suspend right away.

Just to make sure, hibernate has been disabled with "powercfg /hibernate off"?

Yes, I've tried that too on another of my systems for which my shortcut doesn't work.

It seem that the various suggestions only work for systems that support S3 standby. Use powercfg /a to check if yours does.

An alternative to using a shortcut is to set the power button to initiate sleep. This works on all my systems.

I have an old shortcut in an archived desktop folder, the command was a little different?

In the type the location of the item field, it was only

rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Sleep

No path

Maybe it was for a different OS?

Can’t try it as I’m encoding atm

Well, I'm starting not to feel so stupid, I though this would going to be dirt simple.

I don't care to have the power button be the sleep button. :) My system apparently does support S3 standby. AAMOF, it seems with hibernation disabled, that's the only state that is supported.

Now I just have to figure out how to keep the mouse from waking the computer up.

I have that disabled in Device Manager, but obviously I need more. It's too easy to bump the desk and wake up the system, so I just want the keyboard to do the wakeup.

I actually got the mouse to stop waking the computer, finally found enough cheese! It was a powercfg setting.

It was actually a reddit post that had the info, one of the rare times there was actually something useful there.

I think the key was that my smart mouse was telling the world it was a keyboard, so when I set the mouse setting in device manager, that didn't get the keyboard link.
