dangers of using outlook 2003 only for the calendar/reminder function?

You still seem to think that Reminders are objects in their own right. They are not.
Reminders are optional properties of Appointments or Tasks.

Tasks are not something that you create by marking something else.
Tasks are objects that you create.
You can set a Task to have a Reminder if you wish.

Tasks will be shown in the ToDo pane on the right-hand side until, optionally, you mark them as complete. [Actually there are several options available for listing tasks and you will need to study Outlook Help about this to see what you can do.]
Outlook Help explains this in detail e.g.
Track and Manage Tasks | Microsoft 365
Using Outlook's task management features - Microsoft 365
Assign and track tasks - Microsoft Support
Managing Tasks has remained broadly the same across different MSOffice Outlook versions. I am not familiar with MSOffice Outlook 2003 so I cannot guide you about any peculiarities it might have. That's why Outlook Help is there to guide you.

Your link to managing tasks in outlook.com is not relevant. That article is about the MS online service that is called Outlook.com not MSOffice Outlook. MS have caused a lot of confusion by re-using the same name for lots of different things. They now tend to refer to MSOffice Outlook as "Classic Outlook".

Again thank you so very much :)

Again thank you all very much for your helpful and informative replies :) ... this in particular is very helpful info, that you can mark something as a "task" to complete and it will just stay there in that right hand pane in outlook ... can you just create a task and it stays there forever in the right hand panel until you dismiss it or otherwise tell it to go away or do you have to email it to yourself as well? Like say if you created a task as per the instructions below for example (specifically the "create a task" instructions)

I like to email calendar events to myself (share with or send to) and flag them. That way I can add notes to the email and see them later. Like I said, I have them older than 15 years still sitting there because I haven’t marked them (or removed the flag)

I think the point here is that you may be able to learn or adapt to Office 2021 so that you don’t need multiple softwares/apps to do what one Office Suite can.

Office LTSC 2024 has no problem with calendar -- not sure exactly what the OP's beef is about.

Cheers
jimbo

Hi Jimbo.

The OP want’s their reminders (after expiration) to always be visible and not vanish until such a point that they dismiss the appointment/ calendar date. There are ideas or practices being thrown around so perhaps the OP will consider using a more recent version of Office as apposed to Office 2003 for Calendar, eMail in another program and Office documents in yet another.

I think all suggestions should be presented to and considered by the OP without one member dismissing another members suggestion, crudely, especially when the suggestion works for the person suggesting it and has done so for 20 years.

Flagging an eMail or just adding an appointment to the TO Do list, would ensure they are “Forever”available until dismissed.

My method of eMailing an appointment to myself enables me to FLAG the email with the appointment as well as add extensive notes to the eMail. In many cases attach the appointment to the original email sent from a client and FLAG for it to be added to a task.
I dare say there are others methods of doing this but they don’t concern me, however interesting to read.

Seriously you guys are the best, the screenshots (like the one from Try3/Denis), the detailed responses - thank you so much :) .. antspants comment " just adding an appointment to the TO Do list, would ensure they are “Forever”available until dismissed is particuarly comforting I had no idea that was the case! Clearly I have some work to do here as far as getting familiar with the outlook 2021 I purchased (okay technically "office pro 2021 but honestly I just bought it for the outlook :p ) ... thanks again everyone :)
