All,
I am trying to enable the Device Connect and Device disconnect chime but going through the process it just doesn't seem to work. Process as follows: Settings > System > Sound > Advanced > More Sound Settings > Sounds > Windows Default > Device Connect or Disconnect (select either). At that point the indicator will be highlighted as yellow but when I hit 'Apply' it defaults back to unhighlighted and nothing happens. What am I doing wrong? I've gone through this process a few times and even watched a few vids on it but still no joy. What gives?

It will take process of elimination to pin it down.
Make sure you have no corrupt system files that is causing this problem. Open a command prompt as administrator and type
sfc /scannow
Pay attention to the scan results to see if SFC found anything it could not repair. If it found corruption it could not fix followup with this command (note the spaces)
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
Restart computer
Test your sound again.

If still no sound, test the .wav files.
click the "test"button. Does the computer play the windows hardware insert.wav file?
If it doesn't, use the drop arrow and select another sound from the list. Test it. If the new sound will play, click apply OK. Then try to inset a usb drive. If it plays when you test it but doesn't play when you insert a usb device see if the problem exists in safe mode.

You can also test using another user account.

Report back.

Thanks for the suggestions. I ran scf/scan now and first pass did find some corrupted files. Second pass was clean. But, something interesting.... I have 3 front USB ports on the (new) machine. Only about a month old. Just as a test I connected/disconnected a USB drive in each port individually. Two out of the 3 play the connect/disconnect chime just fine. The third doesn't for some reason. And of course the USB port I was testing my system sounds on was the one that wasn't working. I don't know what is going on but at least 2 out of the three are working. Still kinda' bugs me though.

Glad you figured it out. It's probably a defective port but just to be sure use a strong flashlight and make sure it's clean inside. Components that new are still under warranty.
