I am generally fairly proficient, but sometimes I work too late at night, and make mistakes.
I was creating new user accounts to try to get Password Protected File Sharing working on my desktop, and two laptops ( All W11 24H2 ).

In the process I appear to have accidentally deleted my main ( Microsoft ) user account on my desktop.

I am currently logged in to a local user account on my desktop, with administrator privileges, and in Settings / Accounts / Other Users, my main account is not listed. All of the programs that were installed for that user, do not work. The User folder still exists, but I cannot access it ( as expected since I am logged as a different user. )

Can I get back to my main user by re-booting, or is there something else that should be done to prevent loss of programs, and user data?

When I try doing that Microsoft advises that another user on this computer already uses that account, so it cannot be added.

Edit

PS: I clicked the link to Sign in with a Microsoft account instead.

you disabled signing in with Microsoft accounts. check the setting above.
if you're using home like your system details state, run command prompt as admin and run this to enable secpol:
Code:
FOR %F IN ("%SystemRoot%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientTools-Package~*.mum") DO (DISM /Online /NoRestart /Add-Package:"%F")
Code:
FOR %F IN ("%SystemRoot%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientExtensions-Package~*.mum") DO (DISM /Online /NoRestart /Add-Package:"%F")

after installed, Win+R and run
Code:
secpol.msc

heres a .bat you can use to enable it as well. paste into notepad and save a secpol.bat, run as admin
Code:
@echo off
pushd "%~dp0"
dir /b %SystemRoot%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientExtensions-Package~3*.mum >List.txt
dir /b %SystemRoot%\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientTools-Package~3*.mum >>List.txt
for /f %%i in ('findstr /i . List.txt 2^>nul') do dism /online /norestart /add-package:"%SystemRoot%\servicing\Packages\%%i"
pause

Thanks for the replies. I guess my first question is whether this is just a sign-in issue, or have I actually lost the user account?

Is there a risk to signing out, and trying to sign in again under these conditions?

Does it show up in C:\Users?

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I bit the bullet, and logged out. I was then able to log back in with my usual user account, and all is well.

What I found REALLY confusing was that the usual user account was not listed in Settings / Accounts / Other Users. I presume it only listed the Local Accounts.
