Yes that's me again, I was doing some work behind the PC, suddenly I hear a strange ticking sound coming from the PC, I didn't trust it at all so I shut down. The PC just kept loading loading loading loading..., I turned it off again, it said that Windows had to be restored and afterwards I had to reboot. So I later went to explorer again, and there I already saw that my internal HDD had disappeared. I smelled danger so I went to Partition Manager to see what was wrong. And yes, only 3 GB of my 2 TB internal HDD was left. Great. Now what to do? I tried formatting the partition again but Windows kept giving an I/O error message. Then let's have a look with MiniTool Partition Manager. And that one indicated that the disk was Read-Only all of a sudden. Huh? The 3 GB partition can no longer be expanded to its original state either, searching for files is impossible. I am close to despair. Fortunately, Windows is on an SSD instead of the HDD drive which is now in abeyance. Is it now an EX-HDD (pun from Monty Python) or how on earth is this still recoverable? HELP!

Clicking in an HDD/Hard Disk Drive indicates a major problem. It's the relay in it that moves the arms holding the read/write heads across the platters, the click signifies parking those arms, not reading correctly. Only cure is a replacement. If there's data absolutely needed such as a companies financial records there are companies that usually can retrieve it, last I used some time ago was Ontrack.

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
Yes Clicking is Death to a HDD sadly. Replacement is needed. HDD are cheap BTW (well I buy used but so Far so Good) but you could get Active Disk and create USB to boot and try to recover Data LINK

Well, after hard work......... I´m on Linux Mint (ok, you won´t like that.... I guess!) because I don´t have the installation USB stick for Windows any more. Damn, I should have backuped my drive, don´t I? :( (and on my SSD who resides with my broken HDD in my desktop PC, and that rhymes!) Oh and recovery gave me blue screens of death, kept getting that. So yeah, that´s then a one-way ticket to Linux (found the Linux Mint DVD, the only one.)

Most likely the disk is dead. Forget about all your data there. Just buy a new disk and reinstall Windows. Some other threads explain how to create a bootable Windows Setup USB from Linux. Or just go to a friend with a Windows computer to create it.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

If the disk is not detected properly (less capacity or zero), then it is not usually repairable. Unless the controller is damaged and you find another one exactly the same model (P/N). Then you can try to swap the controller (printed circuit) from the new to the old and read your data. Needless to say this voids the Warranty of both disks.

Replacing the PCB (circuit board) of the disk might not be too bad idea... You can find only the board in eBay, just search with the P/N of the disk.

Check if it's recognized at all in program like CrystaDiskInfo and if it is check SMART table.
Also Mini tool partition wizard, there is possibility that just file system is scrambled.

If the price of the PCB is not too high, I would try it. If it doesn't work I would only lose some money. Don't forget to also order the appropriate torx screwdriver.

Odds are slim, that worked regularly on IDE drives but SATA drives have firmware chip which has to be replaced from old dive. Only then there's a chance to save files. There's no guarantee that PCB is only faulty. dame thing happen when one or more heads are faulty.

Well, after some struggling I'm back on Win 10 and well.... on the search in the meantime for a new machine. Oh well, it WORKS at the moment. And well... 10 or 11? I dun kare! lol Had some serious trouble with password less logging in (one time even locked myself out!), so after THREE TIMES REINSTALLING I'm finally DONE with setting up EVERYTHING!
