Disable Certain Hotkeys/Hotkey Functions (Screen Capture)

I'm trying to set some hotkeys for ShareX, but am having trouble overriding some default combinations. Particularly, I can't seem to get around Win + Shift + S and Win + Shift + R opening clipping mode and Win + PrtSc taking a full-screen-shot. I'd thought disabling or uninstalling Snipping Tool might get around this, but apparently these functions are actually a part of the OS rather than the app? (Win + Shift + S/R are definitely integrated with it, but still run with limited functionality if it's removed.)

I'm aware I could use AutoHotKey or PowerToys KBM for the task, but I'd prefer a more direct approach if possible. I also know there's a registry entry that can disable certain hotkeys, but I understand it's not very precise and I wouldn't want to disable anything more than what I need to. Does anyone know of some more elegant solutions?

I chose the easy rout of selecting unused key combos. For instance, to open ShareX to capture I use ctrl / prnt. (Because I still want to use Windows screen capture also)
So many combos you could use, personally, I’d leave combos already taken, alone.

Doesn’t tell you how to override these default settings but I thought I’d comment regardless.

this reg will disable the windows s' hotkeys:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"DisabledHotkeys"="S"

merge reg key and reboot

I already know about that, mentioned my concerns in my post. I suppose it could work if I was able to guarantee there aren't any native hotkeys associated with S I'd be disabling in the process.

those are the 2 shortcuts with Win key + S in them that will be disabled

...it works with Q too?? That's new to me lol. You sure that's the only one?
This entry should only affect like, desktop hotkeys, yeah? Definitely wouldn't want to be disabling Ctrl + S or the like heh. Do you know if I can use this key to disable PrtSc hotkeys?

its not permanent. if you dont like it, delete that key (the one you'll be creating) and reboot again. that reg entry only disables WINDOWS key shortcuts pertaining to 'S'.

here is a list of all windows keyboard shortcuts if you want to look through them

Alright... how about Win + Shift + R and Win + PrtSc? I definitely don't want to be disabling the Run dialogue, and... well disabling PrtSc hotkeys would be great really, if I knew how.

Yeah, I've already done that. My issue is with the Win + PrtSc shortcut, which takes a screenshot of the entire screen and seems to act through a separate mechanism from both Snipping Tool and the legacy PrtSc behaviour.

What actions are you trying to set to Hotkeys?
ShareX is capable of a host of tasks just by pressing PrtScrn only...,
• PrtScrn then hover over nothing but the empty Desktop then press Enter captures whole/all screens, or
• PrtScrn then hover over a window, or UI element, or app element then left click, or
• PrtScrn then left click and drag for freehand capture...,
... and that's just the PrtScrn key...

You simply can't override Win/PrtScrn unless you run @dacrone 's reg script

create an identical reg entry but make it R instead of S. that will disable any hotkeys that contrain Win and R.
it will disable:
Win + ROpen Run command

EDIT:
did you try disabling Prtscn here too?

You guys gotta slow down I'm still replying to the first message 😭
Re: @Edwin
Yeah so, the setup I'm working on right now is:
  • PrtSc > Capture region
  • Ctrl + PrtSc > Full screen capture
  • Alt + PrtSc > Capture focused window
  • Shift + PrtSc > Capture region and open menu for further action
  • Ctrl + Shift + PrtSc > Full screen capture and open menu
  • Alt + Shift + PrtSc > Capture window and open menu
  • Undecided > Open main window
  • Undecided > Video capture
I was planning on using some combination of the remaining keys I'm struggling with for those last two.
Re: @dacrone
But that would disable the Win + R Run dialogue shortcut, which I don't want to do.
Do you know how to disable Win + PrtSc hotkeys through that reg entry? Would I just type in "PrtSc"? If I could do that I think I'd be able to get everything sorted.

All three of these you can accomplish with PrtScrn alone, as per Post #11.

Can? Yes indeed. But I want to have shortcuts for instantly making the latter types of captures.

This was correct:

  1. open the Settings app
  2. click Accessibility
  3. click Keyboard
  4. disable Use the Print Screen button to open Screen Capture
  5. Disable Snipping Tool
  6. Then go to Settings for ShareX and disable then re-enable Prt Screen

To reïterate, PrtSc on its own works fine, it's the Windows + PrtSc hotkey I'm having trouble with. I've even entirely uninstalled Snipping Tool and am still having the issue. I don't have OneNote installed at all, and on some poking it doesn't seem to be related to OneDrive either. As far as I can tell, this is a native part of the Windows OS.
