Hi there
If you want a small easy Linux install with ZERO bloat why not try the latest version of ArchLinux. When the installer is booted run archinstall. This then executes a script which prompts you through the whole process -- even on a modest system takes around 5 Mins.
The only "awkward" bit is at select partitioning. Don't use the default. Simply have 3 partitions : 1) small <500 Mib format fat32 mount point /boot, 2)a system partition format xfs mount point '/' and c) a home partition formatted xfs mount point /home.
after the install select YES to enter chroot and install networkmanager (command pacman -S networkmanager). exit from chroot via exit and reboot system
Now very fast small system with zero bloat. You can add now any software you want including a desktop GUI etc etc. note for access R/W to ntfs file system / share disks with windows install ntfs-3g.
Have fun !!
Cheers
