Edge Reïnstalls Itself?

Testing things on VMs, I've had a few times where after uninstalling Edge (the "proper" way through Settings, through the power of the EU) it immediately comes back. This happens rarely, I think twice so far—i.e. it's not a consistent issue... which unfortunately makes it hard to troubleshoot it. I'm putting together a PowerShell script for automating my Windows setup and I don't like the idea of this happening when it comes to removing Edge, however small the chance. Peaks at the logs I have managed to grab seem to indicate it's related to Edge's update processes, my working theory is it's caused by some kind of race condition where an update gets queued during the uninstallation, and causes a new instance to come after the last is done being ripped out, but I'm just speculating.

Anyone know anything about this? What exactly is causing this behaviour, and how to stop it? One idea of mine is to disable all Edge Update tasks and services, end any Edge-related tasks, uninstall, then reënable them so WebView2 stays up to date, but again it's pretty hard to test how well that would work.

VM's hopped back and forth between restore points a few times, so it might not have been on this exact build when the phenomenon occurred, but I've indicated the OS build in the post. Also attached the msedge_installer.log file from the first time it happened.

If you have to constantly fight with Edge, instead of trying to prevent its install, you could always add Edge Redirect to your setup to render Edge pretty much useless. Edge Redirect will make Windows bypass Edge specific links and stop it from opening Edge when you do things like click a link in search results etc.

Have you not found that some things wont operate without Edge installed? Or is that not an issue with the EU requiremets?

Most likely not what you want but it is an option.

Interesting, I've never heard of this. Indeed it's not what I was looking for, but it may be useful regardless. Thank you for sharing.

No problem. As you’re already in EU mode, I’d guess that all you would need would be Active Mode.

Ah, but I already put so much into figuring out how to get Edge out through the command line! What's the fun in solving a difficult puzzle if you don't get to reap the rewards? :P
(Again though, thanks for sharing. I had no idea these tools existed and knowing about them will certainly be useful someday.)

Will that affect WebView?
Theoretically, Edge isn't supposed to reïnstall itself when removed through the proper means. I've had it taken out for months without it coming back. There just seems to be some edge case (heh) where it comes back immediately after uninstallation. A bug, by all means; but I'm not waiting on Microsoft to fix it. Just another puzzle to solve ;)

An over-simplistic answer (not solution) to your problem.

I note your location is Canada but you're attempting to run in EU mode. I might suspect that Microsft's geo-tracking capabilities have identified this.

Not the case. Microsoft isn't that scummy, fortunately. Again, the uninstallation features do work, there's just a rare scenario where the update service seems to bug out and bring it back. In the times when this has happened, uninstalling again has worked fine.

No, that's an outdated reg key. It only prevents W10 EdgeUpdater from updating legacy Edge to Chromium Edge.

You could get ChrEdge installed anyway because it was shipped inside later W10 CU's (as edge.wim), regardless of what EdgeUpdater wanted.

seems to work for @Ghot to disable chromium edge updates... and fairly recently.. way after w10 edge. and if it disables edge updates, then it wouldnt be able to reinstall it...

Oh yes they can be. Naive to think otherwise

That's my point. Whilst the EU mode will allow removal, subsequent discovery (e.g. during an update) will replace it. Updates are frequently Microsoft's "back door" to "Uh! Uh! No you don't" retribution for actions against EULA (fake MS software licenses are a classic example, the programs run OK until - often major - update(s) when they're discovered).

I wouldn't rule out that type of action in your case.

It doesn't line up with what's been happening. If it was some anti-removal trickery, why would it happen so inconsistently? And it's not through Windows updates, it's just the regular Edge update services/tasks.
Also I'm pretty sure geolocation is turned off on the VM anyway lol
