Browsers and Mail Enable or Disable "Rewrite with Copilot" in Microsoft Edge

copilot_edge_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable the "Rewrite with Copilot" feature in Microsoft Edge for your account or all users in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

When you have the Rewrite with Copilot feature turned on in Microsoft Edge, you'll get help writing on the web with AI that allows you to generate ideas for writing, elaborate, re-write, change tone, format and more.
  • How do I access and use Rewrite?
When you’re writing in the Edge browser, simply use your cursor highlight a passage that you want to try rewording, and you’ll see the Rewrite menu appear for you to click. When you click Rewrite, Copilot will generate a first draft to suggest rewording. From there, you can select from tones, lengths, and formats to try on different wording, clicking Rewrite to regenerate your draft each time. When you arrive at wording that you like, just click Replace to have Copilot insert the new wording directly into your draft.

Rewrite is only available in the Microsoft Edge browser.
  • What can I adjust with Rewrite?
Rewrite lets you adjust the tone of your writing (for example, make it more Professional or Enthusiastic), length (such as making it longer or shorter), and format. You can try out all these adjustments in the Rewrite menu, so you can get the right wording before replacing your highlighted text.
  • Why is Rewrite not showing up when I highlight?
To use Rewrite, make sure you’re signed into Microsoft Edge. The Rewrite menu shows up when you highlight text that you’re currently writing within the browser, such as a social media post or an email. It won’t show up for already written content, such as a website or an article.

Rewrite will not appear if the phrase you’ve highlighted is not long enough to suggest rewording, such as a couple words. In this case, try highlighting a longer passage.
  • Who can use Rewrite?
Rewrite is currently available for Windows users who are signed in with a Microsoft account or EntraID. It is not available for enterprise users at this time.

Default_user-choice_Rewrite_with_Copilot_in_Microsoft_Edge.reg

(Contents of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge]
"ComposeInlineEnabled"=-

5 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

6 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

7 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

8 If Microsoft Edge is currently open, then close and reopen Microsoft Edge to apply.

9 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Hi @Brink, thank you for this post! I used your animated GIF in my MS community post titled: How do I disable "Rewrite with Copilot" in Edge Browser? To give credit, I linked back to this page. I also created an account on this forum to give you kudos and let you know about it.

Now, to an important question: Has anyone else experienced the (Alt + I) shortcut not working anymore? 😢

More details here: Rewrite with Copilot (Alt+I) Not working Microsoft Edge Browser Please reply and upvote!

Glad it could help Tom, and welcome. :shawn:

Alt+I still works for me in the last stable Edge version, but you do have to have the text highlighted first, and it only works if it's something that the AI can rewrite.

Hmm weird, we have multiple users reporting the issue. And did use it myself on a daily basis and it’s not working anymore in different areas I was using it before.

What is the latest stable Edge version you are referring too?

Do you see the rewrite pop-up after highlighting the text? If so, that can be clicked on instead of using the Alt+I shortcut.

Unfortunately not, it is gone entirely.

Update: But it seems as it’s still available in the Edge beta version. So I really hope it is coming back to retail soon. As we don’t want to push the Beta version of Edge to all our endusers.

Good question actually.

I'm running Edge Dev and when I look at 'About' for Edge it shows as Edge Beta although the taskbar icon is the regular Edge one. I'd never given any thought that it would be the Beta version seeing as the Icon is for normal release Edge although of course it makes sense when you think about it.

So rewrite isn't working for me with this build.
