File Explorer - can I move This PC to the top of the list?

Hello, I expect this is a simple problem, but can I move This PC to the top of the list instead of Desktop?
Also, why do i have two entries called Desktop in the list ?

No, as far as I know you can't change that.
But you can put an icon on the desktop, though which you can reach 'This PC' directly.
Please see this instruction from Microsoft.
If you wish so you can make a shortcut form that, that yu can situate in any folder you wish.

And you could change the starting point of File Explorer, that you can do in the Folder options in any opened File Explorer window.
Open File Explorer in [Home] or [This PC].

You have one entry as folder 'Desktop' and one entry as file 'desktop.ini'.
Both are normally there, in my system it is exactly the same.
But I never go back upwards further than 'This PC', so I never see that mess.

Hi Kees, Thanks for the reply. Glad to know it's not just me (especially as I'm feeling very delicate today with probable food poisoning!).
I already have a This PC icon on my desktop and have Explorer set to open at Open to This PC (which seems to apply only to the right side of the display), but I couldn't believe it was actually meant to be this messy!
Are you sure that the second "Desktop" from the top is the ini file? If I select it, I get this:

Might stick with "Files" app that gives me this:

However, I've had some problems with Files in that it refuses to delete/open some files (can't remember which), so had to go back to File Explorer to do this. Maybe this has been sorted it in an update/reinstallation - haven't tried it for a while, as I don't use my computer much nowadays, being retired

To get "This PC" at the top (in the top section) I simply dragged the icon up.

Yes, as far as I can see in your screenprint there is one "Desktop" marked as (File) folder and one as file:

Hi Antspants, I had tried dragging This PC up the list and tried again, but couldn't get it to the top - I did discover I could pin it to Quick Access, but that didn't help., so I unpinned it. However, after these attempts (and I've no idea how it happened), when I now open File Explorer, i get what you have! (see screenshot).
It's no fun getting old - my reasoning and logic are all shot!

Anyway, thanks to both of you for your replies

This is Files - according to all the computer mags, it's the best thing since the dog's nuts for adaptability and what you can do with it
Interesting - a word I used similar to "bullocks" gets changed to "nuts" once you post it!

In July '23 I tested some File Explorer alternatives and that app Files was amongst them.
Reason was that I had read that MS is intending to change the File Explorer fully.
I then I made a short note for each program I tested (on my virtual system).

About 'Files' I then wrote this (translated from NL to EN via Google Translate):

Refers to MS Store (and there this app costs 7.99), but on the same page there is also a link to a classic installer (and it's free).
And that's a good thing, because to pay 8 euros for this...

The program itself is nothing.
It wants to look modern and that is correct in terms of layout:
More suitable for a phone than for a PC.
Distances are monstrously large.
Can you make it smaller, but still...

Completely unusable

May be there would be a possibility to change distances (between File entries, in vertical way) in a updated version, but for now I don't intend to test any more alternatives for now. But if you're happy with it then that's OK for you of course.

Well, I always take complete credit for things that happen for me when I don’t know how. I feel less old and boast about my achievements to the other old people in the retirement village that is my head.

This is one of my main issues with windows. I really wish theyd get the programming done so I can Move any entry around to how I need it for what i do. Its like the right click menu I use delete and rename more than anything. Theyve had them at the bottom of the menu always. now they lie in a row-ish thing when i right click..better but let me be able to move any and everything around. SIck of Microsoft controlling everything. Besides I get how the tech wasnt there 20 or 30 years ago but they have NO excuse now.

What I hate is that they are too close together. I can't even guess at how many times I had to restore a file from the Recycle Bin.

That's one of the reasons I get upset when I hear about new emojies and desktop stickers. To me that time and effort should be put to better use.

Yes exactly. For years until now because they have the top ribbon in the right click menu, but the rename and delete where both on top of each other. You know how many times in my life ive accidentally deleted a file when I was trying to rename it..lol. those need to be seperated. And yes the padding space between them needs to be larger.

Sure you can.... Just use the tweaks in post #5, and adjust a few column headings and you end up with this....
