OS
Windows 11
My File Explorer isn't working. It won't take me to other places. I re-installed Windows and it was fine until I restarted my PC - then nothing.
Thanks for any help

My File Explorer isn't working. It won't take me to other places
What other places do you want it to go? It's a file management app, reads and helps manage drives and software stored on them.

Do you have any 3rd party app installed that alters the GUI.? If so uninstall or update it.

No, I don't have any third party software installed. Richt now, it's fresh and new from a reset but it didn't last the last three times I've done that so I'm not getting my hopes up.

So after the reboot, when it’s not functioning properly, what exactly is it doing? Does it launch or does it crash and close? If you try to RUN %windir% or %systemdrive% does it open to the correct location?

In the past, I experienced some problems with File Explorer after using certain Vivetool commands.
File Explorer would start, flash over the screen and immediately stop again.
Does not seem to me likely, that you used that, but just in case:
The cure would then be to do this command: vivetool.exe /fullreset

What happens if you 'run' explore? Press the WIN key and then 'E' or 'e'

If you hover the mouse over the File Explorer icon in the tray, does a tooltip popup saying File Explorer?

After the reboot, explorer will open but won't link to any folders. Following all your suggestions, there was no response to the "run" instructions or command line. Screen shot - 1738339420099.webp

have you run sfc /scannow from a command prompt with admin rights?

Ran scannow and it's clean. I think I've found the problem. I was using personalization software.

Before you apply any tweaks to Windows, make a full backup! I wonder why you said ealier that you hadn't any third party software installed?

Use Macriun free or Hasleo to make an image backup weekly. Then, if you get a problem like this it takes just a few minutes to restore your computer to how it was before you fiddled!
