Marked as solved now.
I've not been wanting to give up on this for ages -- It's now possible -- you though need to be signed in to the appropriate insider channel even if you installed the earlier build via UUPDUMP etc. Also have the "Get latest update" switched on.
First ensure on your Windows to go system you delete Windows.old via windows tools ->clean system files. Also clean the C disk of "delivery optimisation files" if they exist.
now DON'T DELETE the reg.edit entry PortableOperatingSystem but change the value to 0.
Reboot.
Now do the windows update --- working !!!!!!
