My friend has a security camera, it shows it's SSID 2G yet all his other equipment has the same SSID but shows 5G. Is this right or wrong.
My Wi FI only shows my SSID but no G number, my ISP is TalkTalk, how do I find it?

If things are working I wouldn't worry about it. Some device label or present signals on multiple channels 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz channels which technically are two different SSIDs but many devices may simply combine or hide that fact from the user.

I thought 2G, 3G, 4G, & 5G only referred to Generation. Can a Wi Fi app accept both 2G & 5G?

Not the same as cell mobile generations. In Wifi it refers to base carrier frequencies, 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz

@Pnokio can you clarify? You are talking about wireless and not cellular. See dlross' comments

As explained before many routers use "smart" wifi i.e. they connect to either 2.4 GHZ or 5 GHZ from a single SSID automatically depending on signal stregth etc.

2.4 GHZ is the older slower wifi standard. 5GHz is a more modern faster standard.

Many remote devices only use 2.4 GHZ.

Other routers have 2 separate SSIDs - one exclusively for 2.4 GHZ devices and one exclusively for 5 GHZ devices.

On most routers that have a single SSID, there is usually an option to split the SSID into two exclusive bands.

I had a BT router that would not split the SSID and it was a PITA as my pc kept being connected to the slower 2.4 GHZ band. Fortunately, I still had an older BT router (I was upgraded) that did allow the SSIDs to be split.

In simple terms virtually all 5GHz routers can also connect to 2.4 GHZ devices.

An older 2.4 GHZ router will only connect to 2.4 GHZ.

"VM489901-2G" is simply the SSID i.e. name of your WiFi to which the camera is connected. You don't know from this screen what frequency band 2.4GHz or 5GHz or 6GHz indeed it is connecting though nor to what standard i.e. b,g,AC,AX or BE. The router will tell you more.

Sometime in the late 2014 the Wireless/Wi-Fi adapters started including both 2G and 5G on 802.11g/n adapters. My daughter and I had Notebooks with only 2G, she has streaming video and her Router is set for only 5G. Cellphones could access it but not our Notebooks. Through salvaging of parts I got 2 of my Notebooks and her Notebook with the newer adapters I had saved. My oldest Notebook has only 2G but I disabled it and use a USB Dongle with 802.11ac and both 2G and 5G.

This is inaccurate.

The SSID is suffixed with 2G.
So clearly the camera is using 2(.4) GHZ.

The router must be transmitting 2 SSIDs as many do.

The other SSID will be suffixed 5G.

It is highly unlikely the SSID is a dual 2.4GHZ/5GHZ SSID aa that would not have any suffix as a rule.

This is inaccurate, the SSID is a text string and can but does not have to contain information about the Frequency Band it is operating in. The SSID in fact can be renamed to read anything, even "cereberus-007G".

That VM489901-5G is just a name, SSID, not measurement units which maybe be 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz or even Ethernet.

The Ethernet SSID on my new Laptop has -5G at the end. Historically I made up the SSID name for 5 GHz with xxxxx-5G because the Laptop was first connected up just with 5 GHz.
Now it is connected with Ethernet, the xxxxx-5G network name is retained.

The other Laptop has xxxxx for both Ethernet and 2.4 GHz wireless SSID.

The Router presumably just treats the network names as one, it certainly does not append anything to those names.
