Getting Windows ready. Don't turn off your computer.

Ran WU on the old laptop and got down to the CU and .Net updates, with Restart Now button. CU was at 95% download for about an hour, so I went ahead and restarted. Now the message in the title has been on the screen for over an hour, with the spinner still spinning. If I turn off, will there be smoke, fire, and small explosions, or just maybe the need to start the update process again? Advice, please. Thanks.

I don't think I've ever waited an hour. Maybe I have a touch of adult ADHD.

I've done it a few times with my old, slow, unsupported laptop. Sometimes I had to download the update and install it manually.

Thanks @bobkn, I just did it, and Irwin would have been disappointed. Nothing much, except that I had to download and install several updates (again).

Well, so far, so good (as the guy who jumped off a forty-storey building said as he plummeted past the twentieth storey). It's now updating to 19045.4713 Release Preview, the latest version of W10 to date. Kinda slow at everything, but what would you expect with 4GB of RAM and a 20+-year-old CPU? Thanks, readers and bobkn.

I ignore the Restart that comes up about half-way through and wait until all is done, haven't had any issues doing it. I occupy the wait time by cruising the 'net or playing Mahjongg.
