It seems like a few days ago, Google Chrome - both Dev and Beta is having issues with displaying the icons for Likes/Reactions in Facebook when the mouse pointer is placed above the Like while it does still show the tag.

This is what it looks like in Google Chrome (Dev and Beta):

I deleted my account but I have seen this before and not surprisingly they reappeared.
I can’t say I am right, but Facebook Devs are always screwing with that data thief, it could very well be a FB issue.
Works on one, not the other. I have seen many elements of Facebook do this across browsers across 18/19 years.

GPU driver issue?
Do all the normal stuff like history, cookies etc.

Which Windows version are you using? You have them all listed. If it’s Windows 7, you’re out of luck, apparently they wont work. No idea why.
If not, do the cache thing.

Also, Chrome had an update on the 10th, you get it?

Using the latest Intel 8th Gen graphics drivers (Intel® UHD Processor Graphics DCH Drivers v31.0.101.2130 WHQL Certified (7th-10th Gen) and the latest Nvidia 561.09 drivers that came out earlier today.

Windows 11 23H2 22635.4145 Beta Insiders as mentioned in the bottom of the original post since it always ask for the Windows version in the first post.

Chrome Dev 130.0.6699.3 and Chrome Beta 129.0.6668.42 on this machine, both have the same problem and I already manually cleaned cache and cookies for Facebook.com the other day.

Let me check on another machine that I bought to fix the GSOD problem on this machine and post an update in a few minutes.

Other machine is a Acer Aspire 3 with Core i7-1165G7, Windows 11 x64 Home Edition Build 26100.1742 24H2 that came out yesterday.
Intel iRIS Xe on v32.0.101.5989 September 4, 2024 Drivers and Google Chrome Beta v129.0.6668.42 and it works correctly.

On the original machine, incognito mode also works. Maybe some browser extension is the issue?

Possibly. I did read someone say “Try Incognito mode” and ignored it as rubbish. They mentioned no fix though.

Is Chrome having issues, but functioning properly in an Incognito window?

  • It could be an extension issue. If possible, try disabling all extensions and testing each one to identify the troublemaker.
  • It could also potentially be a cache/cookie issue. Clear the cache and cookies and relaunch the browser. This will help with any application state issues.

For the cache and cookies, one really only needs to clear fbcdn.net and facebook.com even without a browser relaunch but the browser relaunch was done already.

I used Disable Extensions Temporarily to toggle off all extensions, the problem existed until I did hit CTRL+F5 to refresh the page. I took a screenshot of the extensions so I know which ones were on and which are off, will set 3 extensions (which is one entire row) at a time to what the screen shot shows, hit CTRL+F5 to refresh and see what happens.

Looks like it is caused by one extension that was updated on September 6, 2024. If I turn off the extension, the problem goes away or I can leave the extension on but toggle off the Automatically allow access on the following sites and then manually toggle facebook.com off, the problem also goes away.

What is interesting is the other machine had the same extension enabled and had it on automatic and it worked. I'm reporting it back to the extension developer. Thanks @antspants and @Edwin for your help!

"Thank you for the bug report! This appears to be related to a workaround we implemented to improve compatibility with some other browser extensions that work directly with network requests (Urban VPN Proxy and Survey Junkie are two I'm aware of, but doubtless there are many others). I'm able to reproduce the bug if I enable one of those extensions.

Would you be willing to share with me the list of other extensions you have installed? It will help me to know which I need to test with in the future.

That's not the Facebook developer, that's the developer of the browser extension that caused the problem with Facebook as the extension is from a few Universities in the U.S. for educational research.
