Having issues ripping songs to my blank CDs

Here are what the disc's say
-Maxell DVD+R, 4.7GB, up to 16x, 2 HRS SP mode, RW DVD+R
There are no issues with my disc drive. It appears that it successfully rips songs, but they just aren't playable in my car. I notice that on windows media player (or whatever the default software you use to rip songs) there is an option to change it to an audio cd, but data cd is selected each time. I have downloaded other software but it never plays in my car. I just want to make a nice little CD for my girlfriend but no matter what I can't get it to work

Any advice would be very much appreciated

It's been many moons since I burned music CDs. As a testament to my old age, I do remember I had to use a file format that my player could play. As I said it was a long time ago and audio equipment has changed a lot in vehicles, but I used .wav format. I also used CD-R, not DVD discs.

Many later model cars have usb ports, which would be the way to go nowadays to take your mp3 music with you on a usb drive. That be the case, you just copy mp3 files to a flash drive. There is no burning like with a CD.

Ohh gotcha, so it's the fact that it's a DVD disc that's the issue. I thought there was some way I could change it or something. I obviously don't know much about computers or cds lol. Appreciate it! I just happened to find them at Goodwill for $1 so I wanted to try to make it work.

Look at the front of the car radio. You should see MP3 or WMA. So you know that the car audio can play data CD-Rs with MP3 and/or WMA audio files. Even if it does, keep medium quality, most play up to 128K or 192K bitrate, don't use 224K or higher, it's probably not supported. I use 128K which is considered close to the original AUDIO-CD (aka CD-DA) quality.

If you don't see any MP3 or WMA logo, then probably the car radio plays only standard CD-DA discs. In that case you can only create standard audio CDs up to 80 minutes uncompressed 44100Hz 16-bit Stereo audio (roughly 20-25 songs). Windows Media Player can do that or WinAmp, but you can also import MP3 or other files to Nero and automatically convert them. Make sure to select the Audio CD template, you should see 0 out of 80min, not 700MB at the progress bar.

I doubt your car stereo can play DVD disk. Try using CDs instead.

Yes, it must be a CD. As others have said, many (but not all) car CD players can play mp3's from a data CD. My car has a CD player that's over 10 years old and can play data CDs, whether they are CD-R, CD+R, or CD-RW disks. For maximum compatibility with any CD player burn a CD-R (or CD+R) as a standard audio CD.

Aftermarket, though. Some cars include DVD players and have small LCD monitors to entertain back seat passengers. (At least, that was an option a few years ago. Haven't seen it in auto ads on TV for a while.)

The best chance of working are CD-R and possibly CD-RW discs to experiment with writing/erasing. Using CD-R write once discs when you know what works.
Data Disc with MP3 files are probably best followed by Audio CD format. You will get a lot more tracks on in MP3 files, maybe 10x more than in the Audio CD format.

Please note that the latest Windows 11 Media Player does not write discs, you have to use Windows Media Player Legacy.

Control Panel > Windows Tools > Windows Media Player legacy.
Start > Windows Tools > Windows Media Player legacy.

If you cannot find that then:
Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off > Tick Media features > Windows Media Player Legacy (App) > OK.

You can also use an App like CDBurnerXP.

Whilst a PC/Laptop DVD drive can use MP3 Data discs CD or DVD, car players have limited compatibility.

A standard audio CD (aka CD-DA for CD Digital Audio) holds 80 minutes of music. For an average 3-4min song, this translates to 20-25 songs. Yes, official compilations contain only 10-15 songs, but they fo it on purpose, they never fill the disc. MP3 at 128K is about 1MB per minute, so 700MB hold about 230 songs! There is no comparison. Pity not all car radios support MP3 on data discs. By comparison a 4.7GB (actually 4.37GB) DVD-R hold 7 CDs!

One thing I did, was to burn at a slower speed. Fast speed didn't always work right for me. :zany:

Yes, I totally forgot about that. Avoid speeds over 8x when burning an audio CD or it may not be detected properly by all players.

Your trying to compare a car DVD player and a car stereo. They're two different things.

My car AV system is a superset of a "CD player". Radio, GPS touchscreen, Bluetooth (for hands free cell phone usage), CDs, DVDs. and USB audio.

No cassettes. normal

Cool when it was new, in 2013.

I probably should never have mentioned it. I doubt that treating a writeable DVD like a CD would work properly, even if the player was able to read normal video DVDs.

I don't know what's considered essential in a "car radio" 2025. Probably not a cassette capability. Maybe not CDs, either. Maybe streaming music from a smartphone.

A standard Audio CD is 74 mins (650 MB)
They make CDs more than that like 80 mins (700 MB) probably the most popular, and even 90 mins relying on CD reader correction system to work on the tighter spirals.
However the discs outer areas are of lesser quality and the mechanism of the reader may not have the required travel.

It's not that I think you shouldn't have mentioned it. It's just that the format of a DVD is different from that of a CD. A CD player can't read a DVD disk.

Touch screens, Satellite radio, Blue-Tooth and GPS. Some even control some of the setting of the vehicle.

First CD-R discs were 74min, now 80min is the normal. 90min is very rare. All car CD players read audio CDs, but only those that have an MP3 or WMA logo can read a data CD-R with MP3 or WMA audio files. See the front, if there is no explicit logo, then probably only standard audio CDs are supported. To be 100% sure burn a standard audio CD, not data. I would burn both to test compatibility, but if there is no MP3 logo, then it is audio CD only.

Also use CD-R disks only (aka WORM, write once read many), very few players support rewritable CD-RW discs. And as I said, burn to 4x or even 2x. Avoid 8x or faster speeds for compatibility reasons. Needless to say you must avoid very cheap unknown brands, prefer well known brands such as TDK, Verbatim and the like.

PS: In my car, the CD player supports audio CDs only and after playing for too long it overheats and it cannot detect the disc properly. Inserting a new disc it can play that. After the first disc cools again it can detect it. I'm just telling you so you don't panic if you encounter this issue. Just let the disc cool. This is only with CD-R discs. Original discs play fine.
