My desktop screen is by default a little dimmed. This is not reflected in any other app. I could not find this issue anywhere online.1736358216233.webp

In addition to this, the list of desktops in task view show a dark screen on each open desktop, when clicked while on home screen.

Can someone help me understand what this is and how to fix it?

HDR is on, but only when connected to a power source, and adaptive brightness is on when on battery. Changing either does not fix the issue though.

Only when I go to the home screen by swiping down the trackpad with 3 fingers, or double clicking on the bottom right button on the taskbar, otherwise its dimmed. When it is bright, right-clicking anywhere on the home screen will dim it.

Check if this is on:

Control Panel -> Power Options -> Change Plan Settings (for your active plan) -> Change advanced power settings -> Display -> Enable adaptive brightness

There is no option for adaptive brightness under Display. Only one option: Turn off display after.

I think there is a BIOS option for this. Go to your BIOS and check the settings. My lenovo and DELL laptops did the same thing, changed a BIOS setting and fixed it.

I don't want to mess around too much with BIOS. Can you tell me what settings need to be changed to what?

How old is the laptop ? May want to go to the ASUS Forum to see if any ideas ?

I had similiar issue with a Dell Inspiron and screen had to be replaced. Thankfully was under warranty.

Some program is displaying a dark but transparent full-screen overlay window on your desktop, but you don't see it if you minimize all windows (e.g. by clicking the Show Desktop button).

Yeah, but I don't know what software, and I don't know how much harm it's doing

No, power-saving would cause a low brightness screen system wide. This is only on the desktop. Power-saving wouldn't cause the task view situation either.

control panel > add remove programs > screenshot the list of programs installed and maybe we can track it down... otherwise it could be any number of things

I'm not sure about this. I can tell you all the apps installed are either from Microsoft, ASUSTeK, or Intel. I also have Python, Julia, VLC, Discord, Steam, Riot Client and Vanguard, Firefox, Chrome, WhatsApp, utorrent, and Git, all either pre-installed or installed from official sources
