How Do I Know I have a Bad Controller?

I have a 2TB NVME M.2 card that I purchased recently, used to store Hyper-V disks and configurations:

Every night I have BDR Suite backup my Hyper-V instances. This has been working excellently for over a month. However, several weeks ago I started encountering issues with it where errors are being thrown due to the disc not being available anymore to Windows 11. This is from `stornvme` in Event Viewer:

```
Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort3, was issued.
```
```
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\RaidPort3.
```

The weird thing is everything works great until this process starts.

Sometimes it works, but I haven't gone two nights in a row where it goes without error.

I'm beginning to suspect the controller is bad? Really sucks for a new card that has been working great for a month.

Is there any way to confirm this?

Thank you for any assistance.

Now don't go feelin' special.
I give ten points to all new folk that fill out their computer specs. :D

@zbook should be on in a few hours. He'll probably want you to run...

  • Get the latest version of the v2 log collector from the following link - V2 Log Collector.
  • Save log collector V2 log collector 1.xx.zip to where (downloads, for example) you want.
  • Right-click on V2 log collector 1.xx.zip in the Downloads folder and select Extract All. This will create a V2 log collector 1.xx folder.
  • Open the V2 log collector 1.xx folder and double-click on the log-collector shortcut.
  • A Command Prompt window will open with the Ten Forums Log Collector running in it. Press the Enter key to start the collection

Whoa... this might be a moot point now because it turns out my entire motherboard went bad, complaining about the CPU. 😭💥

(I tried several CPUs and none of them worked, so this looks like a motherboard failure)

So that might have been the problem. Oof... just having bad luck with hardware recently and it's really getting to me.

So I will get a new motherboard and see if that fixes things. I am pretty sure it will!

But were the ones you tried compatible with your motherboard?
As the one I tried was previously in that board for 3 years, I would think so. :)

I had to ask. We get folks here who might not understand that.
I can sympathiize. I've been going throught mobo/cpu hell myself. My problem has to be one of the two. I've had a new mobo lying on my desk for weeks, but can't get into the right headspace to change it because my gut is now telling me my cpu is the problem....and I don't have one of those to swap.

Yeah, it's been a total churn over here. It all started 3 months ago when I got a new 5950x to help with a massive issue in a Visual Studio plugin (ReSharper) for the codebase I have been developing for over 5 years now. It actually helped but warmed my room up to 77-81F. 😬

Then there was the matter that I develop on Hyper-V which is slower than bare metal, of course. It's been OK w/ Razor/HTML development, but to pay the bills I was enlisted for Mobile (Android) development and that's where everything hit the fan for me. Mobile development is basically impossible on Hyper-V. However, I had enough spare parts to basically create two machines, and that's what I have been doing. The idea is to have one machine be the cooler/local one for mobile development, and then take the 5950x space heater and move it into another room.

It looks like the MSI x570 Gaming Plus board (used for 5950x) was cooked, and the swapping of video cards I was doing took it to the edge.

However, that 2TB Samsung (also purchased with the 5950x) appears to also have controller problems on this new motherboard, too. 😭 I had another reset and now I am wondering if there is a firmware issue with this 2TB card (and/or Windows 11 issue). This time I was at the machine when it happened and Windows 11 locked for what had to have been 20 seconds. No keyboard/mouse input everything froze. Just like the good ol Windows 95/98 days. 😅

I used Samsung Magician to make sure the firmware is up to date and it says it is.

The other consideration is that I am using the 2TB on the M1 slot and maybe I should move it to the M2 slot.

Woof... what a total ordeal. Turns out the issue wasn't the CPU but the video card in the PCIe port that the CPU uses. Total learning lesson. I knew that card had a problem with its DisplayPort and was trying to salvage it as a GPU provider on my Hyper-V server. Turns out it was a bad card all around, and seating/reseating made it completely tank. That CPU debug light really threw me off.

Oh well. I have a bunch of items to return now but I am back on my feet here. I moved that 2TB to the M2_2 slot and we'll see how that does.

Oof x2 ... nope, that Motherboard went out too. I did a little testing and apparently I misread that Debug LED. I have assembled and reassembled two different machines 3 different times today, spending the whole day getting this done. The good news is that everything is configured as expected/desired now. We'll see how this does, and I will update here with any notable events.

Q: How Do I Know I have a Bad Controller?

A: It will have a large knife and spend most of it's time mugging people. :D

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
A: It will have a large knife and spend most of it's time mugging people. :D

In hindsight, the pistol and hoodie did seem out of place.

Well jokes aside it appears this still occurs on the new motherboard and the M2_2 slot. This occurred during a Hyper-V backup with BDR Suite.

The interesting thing is that this occurred shortly after opening AOMEI Backupper which has being throwing errors for me:

(No errors thrown by simply opening the application, however)

The drive goes offline but then stopping the PC and restarting it brings it online. Data seems preserved and everything else seems OK outside of the fact that the errors occur on the controller.

Hi, check the SMART data of the SSD if these errors appear there and also try to update the firmware (if available). If you're using a storage controller different from the default Microsoft one, uninstall it and leave only the Microsoft one.

Thank you for the suggestions @werty ... SMART (attached) looks good and Samsung Magician is stating it's the latest firmware.

For controllers, that's a good one. This is what I see:

If I understand correctly, it seems like the controller/drive is fine based on the SMART data... so this might be a Windows 11 driver bug -- controller or otherwise. 🤔

OK so I tried with AOMEI Cyber Backup and it is encountering the same issue.

It appears that when the disk is at 100% it just freaks out and disconnects:

I'm going to try to perform a backup with the VMs shut down.
