Hi all.

If you are curious to know how good your PC's performance is, open a Powershell console in Administrator mode and run the command below:

Get-CimInstance Win32_WinSat

This is my PC's Windows Experience Index score:

AH I remember this.....I liked the idea a lot. Unfortunately software never really used it so it never caught on.

It was a good idea with games. Lot better for the masses to understand vs the system requirements.

Oh - that old chestnut. The WEI tool told you virtually nothing worthwhile. It is too limited in its benchmarking.

About all it told you was if pc was slow or fast but hey you know that anyway.

There are far more better indicative benchmarking toofs like Passmark.

I would have rather seen it improved and revisited by microsoft. It is a lot easier to understand for the masses if your computer can handle something if its greater than the software/game number on the software, vs looking at system requirements. It's a shame it failed as I still think the idea holds up.

Example, game needs a base score of 7 to run. Your computer is a 6.5 so you cannot run it. Or your computer is a 9 so it can run it very well. etc

The scores are just pseudo-average figures.

Performance of a pc can vary greatly depending on speed of drive, cpu, graphics interface, Ram etc.

My laptop has mediocre graphics by flies like muck of a shovel when doing engineering calculations but would not be so good as a gaming pc.

Another person could get same average score as my laptop with good graphics but crappy hard drive. Performance could vary a lot depending on what hardware and programs being run although they can have similar average scores.

So I do not think the idea really has much merit at all, particularly as it can lull people into a false sense of security, or worse perhaps - a false sense of insecurity.

Yeah I get that. But the testing process could be improved to account for that. It wouldn't be perfect, but I would argue it would be better than what it is now. I am talking about the average joe trying to get into pc gaming here, not someone who understands system requirements just fine.

You have a base score and a graphics score as well as cpu and all of that. It could say a game requires a graphics score of this or higher for example.

Fair enough sentiment but problem is pcs get more powerful over time.

So who would recalibrate the tool (or would numbers just grow over time) and perhaps also maintain a sort of hardware league table?

MS tried to kill off this tool, probably deciding it does not align with their business objectives and would be a waste of resources anyway.

In the end, really the major games vendors should
agree a standard for rating their programs and develop a rating tool. After all, it is for their commercial benefit, not MS's.

Alternatively they could partner with an existing benchmarking tool.
