How to do a backup of Windows 11 Aero Themes?

I'm trying to make a backup of Windows 11 22H2 default themes in the "C:\Windows\Resources\Themes" folder. However there are three files with the file extension .mss that I can't copy and display error message "you require permission from Administrator to make changes".

How do you backup and restore default Windows 11 themes? Are there any app that can do this for you?

Hello @magi44ken and welcome to ElevenForum. :-)

Probably the easiest way is to just "Take Ownership" of the Themes folder.
Then you can copy/paste it wherever you want.

Be very careful with using "Take Ownership". Do it to the wrong folder and it can mess things up.

Boot from a live Linux distro boot disk. You can then do anything you want with any file on your Windows drive without running into or having to change any permissions. Copying files is one thing. I would however, warn strongly again arbitrarily using this method to delete or change any Windows system file unless I knew for certain the file did not affect the operation of windows. . It's the easiest way I have found to deal with stubborn files.

@Ghot @glasskuter: Great tips guys. I tried both methods and all of them works.

Those .mss files are actually temporary files and are not need it to restore to a full working theme.
