Solved How to Permanently Remove a Suggested Update in Windows Update

I just installed Windows 24H2 to my Desktop PC. I am now working on configuring it. As I was doing this Windows Update did a scan of the system and suggested updates to do. One of those suggested updates is a driver update which I do not want on the system. Specifically the suggested update is Intel Corporation - Display - 32.0.101.6129

I have looked for ways to remove this suggested update from Windows Update but the only option is to 'Install'. How do I get rid of this update that Windows Update seems determined to have me install, I don't want to install it.

Via 'Intel® Driver & Support Assistant' I have had a look at this update (series) on the Intel website and there is a specific warning there not to install it as it is a generic update. The advice is to only install a version of that update series from one that is offered at your motherboard website — in my case Asus. I note from the Asus website that the graphics driver I have install is the latest one offered by Asus (and I just want to stick with that).

I should mention that on a system I use the following Group Policy setting:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Manage updates offered from Windows Update > Do not include drivers with Windows Updates

And set that to 'Enabled' to avoid driver updates from Windows. I have now made this setting on the system but, evidently, I didn't do that soon enough to prevent the issue I am now facing. :0(

How do I get this update to stop being offered by Windows Update? How do I get rid of it?

Argh!!! Too late. Windows has gone and auto-downloaded and auto-installed the driver and told me I had to reboot the system to complete the install. Rebooted don't see anything ill happening with the graphics.

However, for this particular driver I now have two entries for 'Intel Corporation - Display - 32.0.101.6129' being installed. Why two? What am I meant to do now? I looked for an option to uninstall one of them but seems uninstall is not possible.

Use WAU Manager (Windows Automatic Updates Manager) instead in Normal mode and you choose what updates to install or not.

What you should do is first use WAU Manager as mentioned above making sure to check the box at the top that says Disable built-In Windows Automatic Updates. In Device Manager, right click on the Intel GPU and uninstall, choose the option to remove drivers, reboot. then repeat until it says Microsoft Basic Driver. Then reboot into Safe Mode and use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) from Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) download latest version 18.0.8.9 to uninstall the Intel driver so nothing remains behind. Reboot and install the Intel drivers with the version you want and choose clean install.

On my system, this is what WAU looks like currently, as you can see... only things checked will get installed...

You don't really need to get WAU Manager or wushowhide.diagcab or PSWindowsUpdate. This simple PowerShell script will search for available driver updates in Windows Update, which should be successful if we can assume that Windows Update is working properly (and has internet access), and, if it finds one with a Title that starts with Intel Corporation - Display - , will hide that update.

wushowhide.diagcab or PSWindowsUpdate or the PowerShell script will hide the update while WAU Manager will give you a choice of installing the update or not, including new versions of drivers not yet available which was why I decided to use it a few months ago and it will show everything Windows forces to update normally so atleast one will see if Microsoft decides to push a different version later. Ofcourse you can also check to hide it which is what the former solutions all will do anyways but you don't have that personal choice.

The only difference between the 'customised' driver from the Asus website and the generic driver from the Intel Driver & Support Assistant is the version number. Both are developed by Intel, not Asus. In addition, both are WHQL certified. Asus does not make any actual changes to this driver. What they do instead is they continue to test it on their motherboards to be 150% sure that it runs fine on them. But at the same time also, Intel continues to further improve this driver by continuing to release newer versions of it. While it is true that Asus knows their motherboards better than Intel does, it also is true that Intel knows the Intel UHD 770 integrated graphics better than Asus does (or hopefully, as Intel recently have been acting like a gang of peasants... LOL!).

That being said, whether you still want to stick to the older version from the Asus website is your call, and yours alone. Personally, I, always use the latest generic one from the Intel Driver & Support Assistant. It's some ways similar to keeping Windows always fully updated. This practice helps ensure your system remains secure and performs optimally.

What hdmi said is probably true unless ASUS really does customize it or basically Intel will not support you when you have problems. Dell for example has 27.XX as the latest version even with newer versions for security fixes while Intel's latest for the Intel UHD is 31.xx. The first two digits usually is the version of the WDDM which Intel explains better here:

so 27 is Windows 10 minimum while 30-32 are Windows 11.

Thanks for the suggestion of WAU Manager. I've downloaded and had a quick look at it (but haven't applied it as yet). Looks like an impressive piece of well thought out software, portable too — Yah!!!

Of interest to me is that it shows when the display driver I didn't want was installed twice on 15 Dec. 2024. The first install was at 13:41:19. The second install at 18:53:46. Both installs were marked as 'succeeded'. Weird stuff, why install same version driver twice?

In any case I got the (older) driver from the Asus motherboard website and installed that. So that was me back to the advisory note from Intel to only install the newer driver if experiencing problems with the driver version provided/approved by the motherboard manufacturer.

Thanks to all for the responses. Going forward I think I'll be using WAU Manager on a working day-to-day system. I won't be doing that immediately as I've just done this fresh install of Windows, am now configuring it, and want to get the system imaged off before I go deeply tweaking at the Microsoft stuff.
