Hyper-V with "Fast Create of VM" works a treat with a couple of snags. (Super fast !!!)

1) Limited choice of VM images -- but tested with UBUNTU 22.04 LTS (not my favourite but for a speedy test).
2) It just installs so you have to accept the thing "As IS" - bit it's super fast if you are OK with that.
3) NO sound available -- also might not be an issue -- not messing around with UBUNTU - but the test was fine (4 Mins to create and boot the VM - even on a lowly laptop).
4) Choice of Full screen or the default "windowed size" -- doesn't seem any way to alter the window size if not using full screen.

If you don't mind those limitations it shows how fast HYPER-V is these days - for windows HOSTS why bother with other VM software.

It might be possible to fiddle around with this - but I'm not playing around with it -- Installing other distros vis the "Conventional HYPER-V manager" is better if you have the time - but if you're happy with the limitations you can't go wrong.

Also main reason to use other vm tools is hyper-v cannot do sound if guest is not an rdp server.

Thanks for info -- I was just doing a quick speedy one-off test -- so other adjustments / settings probably are available -- the initial test was really nice and fast. The created VM was operating in enhanced mode automatically. A bit of care about networking though otherwise you lose your own LAN connectivity -- easily fixed by "virtual switch etc" - but Networking on Windows ever since its inception has always been a bit of a dog (and that's unkind to dogs),

As for an rdp server you can install on Linux XRDP / FREERDP / RDESKTOP etc -- all these use the rdp protocol (both ways) so you can connect (From windows or Linux)

I think you though may have mis understood about screen re-sizing (or perhaps I wasn't clear).

Within the VM on full screen any GUI app started can have its screen re-sized. My problem was with the screen presented by the HYPER-V GUI which gave either full screen for the VM or the VM to appear in Windowed mode where this screen couldn't be re-sized --or at least I couldn't re-size it. Resizing screens WITHIN the VM up to the maximum of the HYPER-V GUI screen wasn't an issue.

I've got the 180 day free trial of Windows 2022 LTSC server (can re-use by /slmgr rearm 5 more times !!) so I assume HYPER-V will be even better on that -- I've got the standard server edition - not the data centre edition - and added the desktop experience and removed a few of the server stuff like ctrl-alt-delete to logon, nag screens about shutting down, enabling sound and wifi etc so it acts just like a desktop. Office also installs on it and I;ve got things like firefox, and filezilla on it but there's minimal bloat so I'm doing nothing this weekend so I'll have a good play around with this system and try a load of VM's both Linux and Windows VM's.





Hyper-V has improved hugely (and I mean hugely) over the last couple of years -- I'm sure there's a load out there now who have never tried it - but should give it a go. Currently KVM/QEMU and HYPER-V are the best performing hypervisors out there - with KVM/QEMU just having the edge due to more flexibility with hardware e.g dynamic usb re-directs and hardware passthru.

Sorring out sound is a PITA for ubuntu. If you search my posts, I show how to enable sound. Even then, it is not that brilliant for videos as there is a lag between video and audio.

Also, search my posts on Kali, enabling enhanced mode and sound was much easier.

I have not tested the ubuntu quick create for a while - I am glad it is now set up to run in enhanced mode automatically.

Re re-sizing HV screen in windowed mode, you can set the start size of it by modifying one of its config files. I will see if I can post an image. Not same as dragging size but may be enough to sort your issue.




edit:just tested it resizing but could not get drag to work like for a windows vm, but I can custom set size of start window when starting.

1. start ubuntu and at rdp login screen enter name and password (you must have name and password).
2. when the hyper-v config menu pops up, select a size configuration e.g. 1280x720, and click box to save settings.


3) shut down vm

4) navigate to windows hidden folder C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\Client\1.0

5) edit the config file just created (can tell by date) using notepad or similar.



6) navigate to desktop size


7) change it to what ever size you want



the size can be anything e.g. 1100x498 (non custom sizes) e.g.



7) save file and restart vm. Display size automatically gets set to whatever size you choose. The configuration menu (step 2) does not popup as you clicked save settings.



Note: delete config file if you want to see configuration menu.

Note - if you go full screen though, screen size will only fill full screen if set to full screen resolution, rather making full screen redundant though.

How to get sound on Ubuntu in Hyper-V

One of the weaknesses of Hyper-V is that you cannot get sound unless VM has an RDP server. Ubuntu can now be installed with XRDP enabling enhanced mode. There are many web guides how to install Ubuntu in enhanced mode e.g. How to Enable Hyper-V Enhanced Session for Ubuntu 20.04 VMs...

If you use RDP to connect to VM instead of vmconnect, you can resize the RDP windows by drag and drop. You have to setup remote connections from sharing tab in settings. You can change scaling options as well.

Note VM requires external switch on same subnet.

You need a username and password as well.

I could not get it to work reliably though but I probably have not configured all settings.
