Great idea for people with some spare HDD's lying around -- external Icybox 4 Bay enclosure -- around 120 EUR -- switchable RAID 0, RAID1, RAID 3, RAID 5, RAID 10, JBOD, single mode (each HDD can be accessed separately). Switch mode on front panel with leds indicating mode selected. HDD leds as well
It's all hardware driven -- no drivers required so for example on RAID 0 Windows sees a single disk of 12 TB if you have 4 X 3TB HDD's -- good for things like backups / multi-media (and is even bootable if need be but I'd keep an internal SSD for that). Very reliable - no assembly needed unless you use 2.5 inch drives - it comes with mounts and screwdriver -- but for std HDD's they just drop in.
Connect via USB3 / 3.1 or esata (cables supplied) --fir Esata use though pci-e express connector not the standard sata on the Mobo.
Transfer rates also good - perfectly OK for multi-media / other file sharing and backups.
Works also on USB2 but transfer speeds (even with RAID 0) will be less of course.
