Well installing it was not a problem but I guess maybe because it's not activated some functionality is lost and I guess saving templates is one of them
but that's just a guess
Just out of curiosity I moved my hard drive with windows 7 and excel 2010 back into the old pc just to see how it works and it seems to be running more normal in a sense that I can see the grid lines but it was modified from the original and while I have a template when I right click it's not getting used
The template I have is a single sheet with gray background and black grid but when I right click I get 3 sheets with gray background and white grid so that part is still a mystery
Just a quick update
I was watching a video about setting up a template and after it was set up the first time it was opened it was still showing the original default spreadsheet He was saying that excel normally opens the default spreadsheet that is built into excel not the template that was created so than he went into the options and turned off the "Show the start screen when the application starts" so after that it worked
I don't have that option setting in my Excel 2010 so not sure how to get around that
If you can afford it you may be better off buying a later version of Office? Probably solve the issue.
If you search online for Office 2016 or Office 2019 there will be many options to buy but do your research first.
Probably cost £25?
I bought a cheap Office 2019 Retail channel over 4 years ago and it has been okay since activation was completed.
Thanks, I think this workaround is good enough for now It's just that I have the habit of using the right click It would have been interesting too find out where is excel launching it from when using the right click Why bother making a template if it's getting bypassed if you right click
I already have Office 2019 Pro Plus and Office 2021 Pro Plus on my main computers. The only way to test this then was on a virtual machine.
I just created a Windows 11 Pro 24H2 virtual machine with VMware Workstation on my laptop. I had no problem installing Office 2010 Pro in it. Note I haven't activated it or installed SP2 yet.
BTW, bypassing the requirement for a Microsoft account still works.

The thing is that I had visible grid lines when I right click on the old pc with windows 7 I just don't remember how I did it since it was years ago
I thought I could do the same on my new pc with windows 11 but I guess it's not so simple
But even then the right click was not following the template so it is possible I just don't know how I did it
Another clue as to perhaps why it's not working
I looked at the info for the file that opens with the right click and it says it was created in 2006 so not sure how that can be when the excel is 2010
So after the third time of swapping the hard drive into the old pc with windows 7 I finally found why it works there
It has nothing to do with the template
It has the windows color set to light gray
Now the question is does windows 11 have anything like that ?
I tried to look at the settings but I did not see anything that can be used for windows colors just the dark mode but I don't really like that
Windows colours can be changed in the registry but note that editing the registry needs doing carefully since changes happen in real time. There is no 'Undo' or 'Cancel changes'. Make a note of any values before you change them in case you want to change it back.
If you are comfortable editing the registry then see attached pdf.
Changes are only applied after rebooting the device.
Thanks, I tried setting the window color but it made no difference perhaps because some unknown personalization settings or other unknown settings
I also played with personalization settings and used the contrast mode with solid colors and I got the background to change to gray but that also changed the highlights of the cells to gray and also removed the formatting so that was not good so I put it all back
I also tried using a gray picture as a background and while that works it's only for the selected sheet
On the other hand I bought a used laptop about a month ago also with windows 11 and yesterday I installed office 2010 and by some miracle it works perfectly without doing anything I can right click and I get the normal white screen with light blue visible grid
Unfortunately this does not work on my desktop I even uninstalled office 2010 and removed all mentions of excel and office 14 from the registry and reinstalled Office 2010 but it made no difference it's still white on white when I right click to get a new spreadsheet
Not sure if there is some unknown setting in windows 11 that prevents excel from show the normal grid
At least I know a few things now The template has no effect on new spreadsheet when I use right click and windows color that worked on windows 7 is not available for windows 11 Also the the product registration has no effect as it is working fine on the laptop
Ideally I would need some registry hack to change just the grid color in excel without disturbing anything else but there is probably no such thing
Or perhaps some other windows 11 or some unknown setting that would allow excel to show the normal color of the grid
The link was saying that some windows 11 had a problem rendering accurate colors
I figured it had something to do with windows 11 since I eliminated any other possibility
So than I started thinking that it could be a display issue since it worked on the laptop but not on the desktop So than I adjusted the display from warm to cool while I had the excel open with white grid lines and as soon as I changed the setting to cool the grid lines showed up
Now I can open any file old or new and see the grid lines
I recently installed Office Pro 2010 and Visio 2010 on this new W11 Pro build. Everything worked as intended, no problem at all. Since I own Office 2010, and I don't need any of the newer bloat, I see no point in going for a newer version. It activated automatically when I installed.
