Solved Item Type - How to change?

Hey.

I had to delete VLC and roll back to older version. When I did, it changed the way Item Type listed things. Usually when I hovered over file, it would say .mkv, .mp4, etc. Now it just says, Video File. I always hide extension type for known file types, as when I hover over it would tell me the type. This is now impossible when it just says Video File.

Is there a way to get it back to the way it was?

TIA

Hi, welcome.

Firstly, I don’t believe you need to manually uninstall VLC, you possibly should be able to just reinstall the older VLC app version over the top of the current version.

Try this: Option Two (In the link below)

  • In the link at the bottom of this post — find the video files affected in the table at the bottom, and click the link in the first column for each one.
  • A reg file will download
  • Right click on the reg file and run the reg file as admin which will reset the association for that extension to the default.

For instance:

mkvMedia PlayerMatroska video file

  • Run the reg file as admin. Agree to everything until it’s completed.
  • If the PC rejects the file, right click on the reg file and select properties & approve/allow it.
    • OR Double click on the Reg file. When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge
  • Search the table in this link for any other video formats and do the same.

  • Lastly: Reinstall your preferred version of VLC and see if that works.
Alternatively, you could use Option One in the above link and see if that resets the associations and fixes your issue. Then reinstall VLC.

Thanks. Appreciate it.

Let us know if it works, if not, other members will possibly be able to offer an alternative.

(Also, I tweaked that post a little)
