Help! My laptop was in the middle of an upgrade and I forgot and turned it off. I went to use it, got login screen but afterwards a black screen with cursor. I forced shutdown, and turned it back on to go re install windows, now I’m stuck on the blue 4 squares loading screen and I can’t even force shut down. How do I fix it? I don’t know my build number sorry!

I'm assuming you mean where is system reset. IF your recovery partition is viable your should be able to get into advanced startup (ie recovery) by shutting down computer. Hold down shift key (& keep it held during boot) turn computer back on until the recovery screen appears.

If you are unable to get into recovery using that method you can also get into recovery using installation media.

Since we have no way of knowing what update was applying, what stage the update was in, and what condition it left you in,
there's no way of knowing if recovery can get you back in working order until you try it. If it doesn't you will have no alternative but to clean install.

Let me add that if you are using windows 11 Home & you signed in with a MS account, your drive was protected with Bitlocker device encryption by default. You will have to have your bitlocker recovery key to get into recovery options. It's in your MS account. Finding your BitLocker recovery key in Windows - Microsoft Support

Have you tried leaving it on that black screen to see if it will finish the update?
