This little device is used to feed the fibre into the conduit.

It uses compressed air. For long runs they can add a little lubricant to the conduit, then they insert a couple of specially made sponges and using air pressure shoot the sponges through. On the one I watched they shot the sponges 424 meters. Then they feed the cable using this little rig. Air pressure runs two belts that squeeze the fibre, slightly, and push it forward. You can see the cable on the right hand side. They shot 424 meters of cable in about twenty minutes.

It certainly beats digging a ditch, which is what they did with mine back in the 80's.

They have gotten away from digging trenches and use horizontal boring to put or replace utilities My beekeeper friend works for a company that does that another way for them to dig a trench in a crowded area is to use high-pressure water and a vacuum truck to dig the trench.
