Happy New Year everyone!
OK, so not how I expected to start mine lol
I've always been able to update successfully to the latest versions of Windows but the most recent release seems to complete until.... after a few restarts... it shows the message "Undoing changes made to your computer...", and then reverts back to current Win 11 version. In addition to that, for each unsuccessful attempt at upgrading to latest version, it adds a square to a blue screen where I can select which OS I want to run. This never happened before - I would just start PC and go straight into Windows.
I have 252GB free disk space on C:

This is how things stand at the moment:

Can anyone assist please?

I thought I should add that prior to moving forward with your suggestion, I felt it would be a good idea to create a backup image of my current setup. I ran into a glitch that required me to perform a chkdsk and fix the C: drive.

Screenshot 2025-01-06 094112.webp

After doing so, I was able to create my image successfully - however, I feel that there is an extra box showing a partition that perhaps wasn't there before. Is it normal to have 5 boxes? I feel that I always had only 4. Also, do you think that there could be a connection between my Win 11 upgrade failings and the fact that Macrium also failed initially due to C: drive issue?

You should always have a backup, but in general a repair install is quite safe.

This is what It should look like:

1736182463349.webp

Looks like to me your partitions are messed up.

I would do the repair install first, and then see what the partitions look like after doing that. It usually fixes off things like this after doing the repair install.

We can take a look into fixing it if needed after the repair install is completed.

I see you have a LBA partition, are you using MBR to boot windows 11?

Can you run this?

Open cmd as admin:

Type *diskpart* and then *list disk* into the elevated command prompt one at a time and add a screenshot here.

Ideally, you want uefi boot and secure boot on for windows 11, as well as your disk being GPT

Hmm, not sure why there is an LBA partition there... maybe that was added as part of the glitch I've been experiencing? As mentioned earlier, I was pretty sure I recalled an extra partition that was not there before. Which might explain why I now have a blue screen asking which OS Win 11 I want to run when I start the PC?

As far as I know I am using UEFI and secure boot...

Is this sufficient?

Interesting. So you do have them marked as gpt. That's good. I know windows 11 requires the gpt and uefi. Wonder if that lba partition was already on the disk before. I just got confused not understanding why it is there.

Your lacking an EFI partition / recovery. This isn't normally an issue as you can always use windows installer media to do anything the recovery partition needs to do.

Go forward with the repair install, it should fix the installation and replace the partitions for recovery.

We can fix and remove the other offending boot entry later. It might be because you have another drive connected with windows on it. What do you see under run> msconfig> boot > advanced?

Also, 24H2 can be manually updated by using the update assitant:

I would do the repair install first still. But this is another method of updating vs doing it through windows update which may be more successful.

I don't think 24h2 is ready yet, so I would hold off updating for now. But that is just me.

Repair install completed.

Results:
  • It seems to have updated automatically to 24H2 despite my having unchecked updates during the installation.
  • LBA partition still showing.

Will test restarts to see if I am prompted to choose a Windows version.

Perfect. As long as your in the OS you want to be in, all of your files are there etc and your up to date ( seems like it)

Back up your data on an external (not just an image)

And for fun, Post a screenshot of disk management in a large window so it shows everything

But you should be good to go now.

Will take a look at the disk management screen, and then you can go ahead and go back in there in msconfig > boot and delete the others that are not the Current OS / default OS
Then restart and the boot screen choice should be gone.

Or even safer, go to advanced system settings > startup and recovery > uncheck time to display listed operating systems. Click ok and restart.

The BTs entries that are in there are from leftover feature updates waiting to install. Probably from the failed install from before.

1. Having to pick a box/OS seems to be resolved when restarting
2. Still showing extra LBA partition in Macrium
3. While I am now on 24H2, I'm still facing an issue to update:

Can I now go and delete the entries in msconfig that are not indicated as current OS?

Good you have recovery partitions now.

You should be able to delete that LSA partition but I would just leave it alone as its only 100mb.

If you don't have to pick a OS at boot, I would say just leave it. Its temp files that should go away on their own eventually anyway.

Hit the x on that download and install and restart and then check for updates again.

Odd. Repair installs have always fixed windows update issues for me.

Try this:

If this does not work, try downloading and manually installing the latest cumulative update for 24h2 in the windows update catalog.

You want this one:

2024-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 24H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5048667)
