I don't think downloads continue after you've signed out, which you would have to do to be on the lock screen.
Unless ofc, you mean screen saver and not lock screen.
When you're on the lock screen your User is signed out of Windows.

I also have Windows 10 and 11 set to turn off my screen after 5 mins.
But all it does is... turn off my screen... it doesn't log off.

I'm on Win 10 at the moment, but I started a 5GB test download... then manually signed out.
I got this screen and chose: Sign out anyway.
It broke the download...

IMG_20230226_165108.jpeg

I don't know what Windows chooses, when the sign out is automatic.
Sorry for the potato pic... but I have a cheap flip phone. :-)

There's also this, IF you have a screen saver set to run. If this box is checked... then Windows will log out...

Image1.png

By itself, setting Windows to turn the screen off after 5 minutes... will NOT log you out of Windows.

Here's another way to "Turn off the display" if it helps...

Network Adapter may still be going into sleep mode thus canceling downloads .
Press Windows + R and type : "powercfg.cpl" no quotes . Enter .
Open power plan advanced configuration ( next to power plan name ) and look for network adapter . Set to maximum power or performance

Hi Ghot,
before the last updates I could download with the lockscreen indeed Windows didn't ask me to stop apps like you in Win 10 (I don't remember this beahviour also in win 10)
I don't have any screensaver acitive neither thath box checked
I know that turn off the screen don't log out

I'm guessing that by using Win + L, you may be passing over that screen that.. asks.
I have the Win key disabled, so I can't really test that.
But as I mentioned... when you are on the lock screen, you are logged OUT of your user account.

I'm on 22H2 on both Win10 and Win 11 (non-Insider).

Same thing happened to me when I clicked: "sign out anyway".

Firefox and my tabs were still there, but my download was stopped.
I think what happens is, that when you log out, Windows takes a "snapshot" of all open apps.
So they will be there when you sign in again.

But downloads involve you, the internet and another computer/server.
I have the feeling Windows can't "snapshot" that, because ONLY your computer is accessible to Windows.

Try this...
Open and start a youtube, then do your Win + L and then sign back in.
I'd bet that you will still be "at" the youtube address, but it will have stopped playing (reset back to the start point).

I also think that if you are playing a video that's stored on your computer... doing the Win + L and then signing back in, will stop that too. I don't think Windows can "snapshot" things that are... "moving" (dynamic?).
I think only "static" things can be recorded with a snapshot.

It's like the PrtSc key. You can take a screen shot of a video or game, but only one frame of a video or game.
You can't snapshot... things that are moving and expect them to be moving in the snapshot.

That's what I think is happening to your download. When you do Win + L, and then log back in... Windows will probably remember the address of your download, but the download will have stopped, and possibly erased whatever had been downloaded already.

The only thing I know of that can remember and resume a download is a torrent client, like Utorrent.
But I've never tried that while signing out and then signing in again.

When I start a video on Youtube or a play a song on my hard disk and then Log Out they are still playing.
Indeed for example the command for YouTube appears in the lockscreen.
The Lockscreen doesn't stop apps but only lock the desktop so another person can't access to your desktop when you are absent

Maybe Windows stops downloads on log out, so you don't get a corrupt download?
Maybe it started with Windows Update issues, and this was a way to fix that?

Weird. I tried the youtube thing, and then signed out. This time it didn't remember my Firefox tabs or the youtube, and it didn't ask the question it did before.

Weird. I tried the 5GB test download again, then signed out manually. I got the same message in the pic above, and this time I chose: "Cancel", which canceled the sign out.
So... I tried it again, planning to click on: "Sign out anyway", and this time, I didn't get the message, and lost the Firefox tabs and the download.

Ok... now I'm on Win 11... let's see what happens with the 5GB test download...

Ok... I got the message again... and again it said... this app (the download), is preventing you from signing out.

So both Win 10 and Win 11 are doing the same thing. BOTH said, the download was preventing me from signing out.

Again, the only guess I can come up with is that... maybe MS set it up like this to prevent corrupted downloads?

Sorry I've written log out instead of lock the desktop
I've used Win + L, can you try this and check if the lockscreen cancel your donwload?

As I mentioned earlier... I have the Win key disabled.
I don't type very well, and I keep bumping the Win key... so I disabled it.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
Tested it out with Thinkbroadband 1GB download test file and it continues for me when on the lock screen. Same with YT still playing.

As I mentioned earlier... I have the Win key disabled.
I don't type very well, and I keep bumping the Win key... so I disabled it.
Sorry I forgot

Check your power options. I've hibernate disabled and sleep set to 'never' on power.

Even though everything else said that the hard drive would never sleep, this was set to 20 minutes.

Now that I also changed this to Never, the problem stopped.
