M.2 NVMe SSD IO operation failures

My newly installed NVMe SSD creates hundreds of failures seen in Event Viewer and pointing at the new SSD:
"The IO operation at logical block address 0x8120 for Disk 3 (PDO name: \Device\00000041) was retried"

One of the symptoms is it takes three minutes to start Disk management. I've downloaded and installed the driver from Crucials website (MicronNVMeDrivers_x64.msi).

I removed the M.2 SSD and now Disk Management comes up in a second. So the question is what can I do about the SSD?

Uninstall that Micron driver.
It should then install the Windows standard NVMe driver.

I have a Micron(Crucial) SSD and it uses the "Standard NVM Express Controller".
Firmware and whatever comes via Windows updates.

This is my Device Manager. It look like the Micron driver isn't installed at all. Nor is there a Standard NVM Express Controller. Is it possible that my installation of the Micron driver didn't take because the SSD doesn't work as it should?

When I start the Storage Executive the splash screen comes up and stays for five seconds and then disappears,. then Storage Executive doesn't come up whereas it did when the NVMe SSD was not installed.

I presume CT500P3PSSD8 is the Crucial SSD in question.

That entry seems to be wrong, it is not an SCSI Disk Device.

You seem to have some AMD storage drivers of some sort, I know nothing about AMD hardware. I assume these are optional drivers.
I have had problems in the past with Intel storage drivers.

crucial p3 plus 500gb ?

what is it plugged into ? You could try reseating it or try a different nvme slot ( if there is one )

  • Impressive read/write speeds up to 5,000/4,200MB/s1
  • Flexible backward compatibility for most Gen3 systems

Crucial P3 PLUS PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD

It's plugged into the only M.2 slot there is.

yes we know. the relevant information is in my previous post.

If you have a pcie to nvme adapter you could try that.
If it works that would indicate there is a problem with nvme slot on the motherboard
If it doesnt work that would indicate a problem with the p3 plus

If you dont have an adapter you will have to assume the p3 plus is broken or is not backward compatible with your motherboard.

your M2 SSD Uses HMB (Host Memory Bus)
Win 24H2 has problems with this type of drive.

a firmware fix from Crucial maybe available or there is this registry fix for Windows 24H2.
this is affecting all drives that are using HMB.
there is a workaround for this using the good old Registry Editor wherein altering the DWORD value inside the "HmbAllocationPolicy" key in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorPort key fixes it by setting the allocation amount to 64 MB. To do this:
  1. Open the Registry Editor app by running REGEDIT
  2. Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorPort key
  3. Create a new HmbAllocationPolicy subkey if it is already not present
  4. Set the DWORD value of the above key to 0 or 2 (where 0 => HMB allocation off and 2 => HMB allocation is 64 MB)
  5. Restart the PC

best of luck, Steve ..

If you are running the latest version of Windows 11, do you still need to install manufacture specific driver, or are the default Microsoft Drivers sufficient. Tests using the default MS drivers show my driver performing better than the listed spec for each drive

MS drivers for most drives work just fine and on the most part do the job required.
you can test with the divers from the manufactory but this is an individual choice.

at the moment its drives, mainly M2 type, which use HMB on Win 11 24H2 which are having problems.
this is because the default Windows setting for HMB is 64MB. some M2 drives are configured to use much more 200MB etc.

setting the registry with the Windows default HMB settings bypasses this issue until an update is released to fix it.

best of luck, Steve ..
