Whether you like it or not, Microsoft will apparently retire legacy Outlook clients very soon starting this July. A lot of such purported details have been revealed by a M365 message center post.

Have a Online Hotmail account since '98, got an Online Outlook account when Hotmail was supposed to go away. Both then merged into Online outlook.live.com. Checked messages this a.m. and nothing mentioned yet about the change of Online E-Mail.

I did get an email from MS that as of Sept. any MS account would no longer send or receive emails from any third party email apps without using 2FA. It's exactly the same scenario as Gmail now uses.

The safety and security of your information is top priority for Microsoft. To help keep your account secure, Microsoft will no longer support the use of third-party email and calendar apps which ask you to sign in with only your Microsoft Account username and password. To keep you safe you will need to use a mail or calendar app which supports Microsoft’s modern authentication methods. If you do not act, your third-party email apps will no longer be able to access your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live.com email address on September 16th.

What do you need to do?
If you are receiving this email, you are currently using an email or calendar app that uses a less secure authentication method to connect to your Outlook.com email account. You will need to upgrade your third-party mail and calendar app to a version which supports modern authentication methods.

Microsoft provides free versions of Outlook for your PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices which can be easily downloaded and connect to your email account. Using an updated version of an Outlook application will ensure you are connecting in the most secure way.

How can you set up your Gmail, Apple Mail, or other third-party mail application?
Various non-Microsoft applications will have their own steps for connecting to your Outlook.com email account using modern authentication methods. See our help article - Modern Authentication Methods now needed to continue syncing Outlook Email in non-Microsoft email apps. However, you may need to contact the creators of those applications to provide you with instructions. In many cases, simply removing and re-adding your account with the latest version of that application will configure it to use modern authentication methods.

Starting mid-July 2024, legacy Outlook clients will be retired, affecting users with outdated versions on iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows Mail and Calendar applications.

Classic Outlook for Windows is not affected by that announcement:

We will continue to honor published support timelines for existing version of classic Outlook for Windows until at least 2029.

Yes, it does apply to earlier versions of Microsoft Office classic desktop outlook like 2003, 2007,2010, 2013, 2016MSI, 2019LTSC which a lot of people still use. These versions can not use 2FA. Here's MS statement: The following versions of Outlook Desktop do not support OAuth for Outlook.com: Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010, Outlook 2013, Outlook 2016 MSI, Outlook 2019 LTSC. Any release of Outlook Desktop with a version less than 11601.10000 does not support OAuth for Outlook.com.

It's also my understanding that even if one has a desktop version of Outlook (ie:Outlook 2021) and one has his MS account setup as pop or imap, that account will have to be the

Agreed. I was referring to the recent announcement in post #1. Sorry I didn't make that more obvious. (Now corrected.)

Apparently my Microsoft 365 subscription of Office Outlook Classic is not included and I can continue using my IMAP configuration.

Hey Gary, I think that is incorrect. I think you will need to reconfigure your account in Ofc 365 Outlook as an Exchange account as per Option 1 in the first article I referenced. In that same article, which is written for Office 365, it says "If your Outlook is configured to connect to Outlook.com using POP or IMAP, OAuth is not supported. This means that when Basic authentication is fully deprecated, it will no longer connect."
  Check me out on that to be sure. I may be misunderstanding the Microsoft speak.

I thought this change only applies to the use of non-MS third-party email apps that connect to your Outlook,com account. I'm using Office 365 Outlook on my PC and laptop, and the wife has office 2021. Neither of us use any non-MS software to access our account, so I thought we're not affected?

There must be an awful of Office365 users out there who would be affected?

My Outlook is not outlook.com but Outlook classic, the stand alone application. I think you're right if I were connecting to outlook.com. I've never used outlook.com for anything.

Now I'm not so sure either. I use Outlook Classic to connect with my email that's connected to my personal web page. I've had my email connected with my web page for more than 25 years, so GoDaddy should certainly notify me if there were to be a problem. This forum is the first I've heard about it. I wouldn't want to give up using Outlook as I've used it for decades now.
