Move Windows to new computers

Windows 11 Pro 24H2
Computer #2 failed. It turned on but no video. I don't know if it actually booted or not.
I disconnected the drives and then tried different RAM, GPU and P/S but still no video. Suspect either the CPU or motherboard.

My plans are to rebuilt both Computer #1 and Computer #2. Since each computer is getting a different motherboard can I boot Windows on each one without reinstalling it?

I have moved windows without issue by just moving the drive or cloning it to another drive and putting it in another machine. Just make sure you put the new motherboard drivers etc on it. Before moving it's a good idea to remove the old software drivers and chipset etc.

If you don't have much stuff installed on it though, it's worth a clean install.

I have many times restored a system image from one computer to a new one, or swapped the hard drive from one PC to another. Windows is pretty good at sorting out driver for the new hardware it finds itself running on.

What may be an issue is activation after a major hardware change. If you had previously signed in on the old PC with your Microsoft account, then the activation troubleshooter can transfer the activation to the new one, as I did here:

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

    My SYSTEM THREE is a Dell Latitude 5410, i7-10610U, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro (and all my Hyper-V VMs).

Like I said no video at all. I couldn't even get into the BIOS. The computer turned on but I don't know if it actually booted or not.

Both Computer #1 and Computer #2 are using local accounts. Both started with retail versions of Windows.

Computer #1
Windows 10 Pro Retail
Free upgrade to Windows 11 Pro

Computer #2
Windows 7 Ult Retail
Free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro

Note Computer #2 is dual-boot with Windows 7 Home Retail also on it. However, I am not concerned about it.

Other things I plan to do:

Computer #1
Do full backup
Uninstall old drivers
Copy drivers for new motherboard to it
Uninstall licensed software. Will reinstall after rebuild

Computer #2
Can't backup since computer failed. However, it was backed up a couple weeks ago.
Copy drivers for new motherboard to boot disk.

Note for some licensed software on both computers they will be deactivated online and reactivated after the rebuilds.

most motherboards have a bios flashback port and a button to initiate it.

You download the bios to a flash drive to the root of the drive and then put it in the specified port and push the button. Check your motherboard manual. It's usually clearly labeled on the back ports on the motherboard as well.

"Most" seems optimistic. The Asus Prime X370-PRO has no such button. Its manual refers to a "crashfree" mode (p. 3-34), where the board will automatically flash a BIOS from a USB drive if the system won't boot. I wouldn't care to bet my life that'd work, but it could be worth a try.

Fair point. I guess I should say most modern motherboards. At least all the ones I have touched and built over the last 4 years have had them.

The button may be more likely on high-end boards. Example: an Asus Prime Z790-A lacks one. So does the Tuf Z790 board. (At least, there is none on the rear I/O panel.) The RoG Strix board has the flash button.

Sorry if I left this thread hanging without showing what happened after I changed motherboards for the two desktop computers.
Computer #1: Windows 11 Pro: activated OK
Computer #2: Windows 10 Pro / Windows 7 Home Premium : both activated OK

While I was worried about Windows I didn't count on some software not working anymore on Computer #1.

#1 Microsoft Office 2019 Pro Plus.
Problem: Activation would not recognize product key as being valid.
Solution: I ended up buying a copy of Microsoft Office 2021 Pro Plus. It activated OK.
Note: I bought 2 copies of Office 2019 Pro Plus in April 2020. The 2nd copy still works on my old laptop.

#2 Adobe Photoshop Elements 11.
Problem: Activation error. It said the limit of 2 devices had been exceeded. That should be no problem because all I had to do was deactivate it on the old computer so I could activate it on the new computer. I tried this but the deactivation failed. Adobe support said that product was no longer being supported. In other words too bad.
Solution: I did have Adobe Photoshop Elements 2024 on my new laptop. I installed a 2nd copy on my desktop. This is allowed according to the EULA.
Note: For personal reasons I would have preferred Photoshop Elements 11 on my desktop. That is because it is easier to use for simpler tasks.
