OK, I know it's waaaaaay out of date, but it's been working just fine for me. W7 & W10 had no issues and it's been installed on this W11 system for a couple of months, also with no issues. Today, after installing this week's CU, when I launched Excel, the system threw up a box asking if I wanted to register Office 2000. There was no such request when I installed the package with the key when I got this new system. I replied No and the app has launched several times today.

Ah stupid me. I guess I was wondering why MS is asking to register this package all of a sudden and after today's update.

Did it ask you to activate or register Office 2000? It makes a big difference Activation uses the Product key and is required. Registration is totally voluntary. Registration will ask for personal information so I always skip it.

It asked to register. I assume activation occurred when I entered the product key. Never been asked for registration on all three prior systems I used Office 2000 on, which is why I was confused. Thanks for the clarification.

I was using Office 2000 right up to about two years ago when I got a cheep copy of 2007 for 5 computers. Microsoft was still keeping it up to date and I have a bunch of service packs for it. You have to install them in a certain order but it always worked. I think the last one was SP3 in 2014 but the app kept getting updated from Windows Update
I always installed all of these . . .
The .txt file is to remind me what order to install them

Edit: I think I got Office 2007 because I could not install 2000 on Windows 7 64bit
I still have it on Windows XP and it works fine.

I have a number of versions of Office from 97 to 2021. I don't have Office 2000. I had no problems installing Office 2003 on Windows 7 64-bit. I was surprised that after I installed it I still got a lot of updates.

When you had Office 2000 did you install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats. It is for Office 2000 SP3, Office XP SP3, and Office 2003 SP1.

For example, for Word 2000 it adds options to read/write the ".docx" file format.

Then I dont remember exactly why I bought Office 2007 other than maybe it was cheep and I thought I would try it

I also have Office 2017 but I had to cheat to activate it. I always liked Office 2000 the best but I'm getting use to the ribbon

Yes on the compatability pack you mentioned . . . that's the fileformatconverers.exe in my picture.

I never was asked to "register" any of them that I remember.

The first tab on Office 2007 was a strange ball. People mustn't have liked it because in later versions of Office it became the more familiar File tab.
I have two versions of Office 2007 Pro and Standard. I got both of them for free. In January 2007 I went to one of the Vista launch events and received a card with a Product Key for Office 2007 Professional. I used it to activate a trial version of Office 2007. A few years ago I was give an old laptop. It didn't work but I used a program to extract the keys for Windows 7 Home Premium and Office 2007 Standard. I was able to use them to activate Windows 7 and Office 2007.

In 2012 when I took an Office certification class I was able to buy University Office for $99. It was the same as Office Professional 2010. I started using Office 2010 then because I liked it better than 2007.

BTW, there is Office 2013, 2016, and 2019 but Office 2017 does not exist.

I dont know how I made that mistake, I have 2000, 2007, 2010 & 2013 not 2017. Ive never used the 2010.
The 2010 and 13 are "Pro Plus"
