I have a desktop running Win 11 Pro that is acting funky, and I'd appreciate help repairing it. Funky #1: If I right-click on a Start Menu icon and select 'Unpin from Start'. the icon does not disappear.

I'm not sure what you want to do. If you 'unpin' an app icon from start, it won't be there in your start menu

What you are doing should make it disappear from the Start menu, but try this ...
Right-click the icon in the Start > All apps listing > and try Unpin from Start Menu from there.

You are right. This is just the simplest example of something that should work- used to work- but doesn't any longer. I chose it as an example of something that used to work but no longer does.

What you are doing should make it disappear from the Start menu, but try this ...
Right-click the icon in the Start > All apps listing > and try Unpin from Start Menu from there.
Excellent experiment. I tried, but right-clicking on the icon in the All Apps list likewise generated the popup menu that did not function. I also tried Repairing and then Resetting the app, but no improvement. This remains a mystery wrapped in an enigma.

Not necessarily. The more someone messes with or plays in the registry and other settings in Windows, the more likelihood of blowback.

The malfunctions I'm seeing are unusual like this one, the kinds of problems for which no one may have solutions. So my next question wil be: Is there a way for me to rejuvenate this computer short of a fresh full install? The game's afoot.

Tony, I’d guess there is a possible chance that a Repair install/In-Place Upgrade might be painless. Could fix ailments.

You wont lose anything. Read it first.
If the computer is supported for Windows 11, Option One might be the go?

Also, Tony. I recall you ran that BSOD script from Windows 10 Forum. Any chance any of this has started since that?

I was going to type all the cleanup commands, but if you just download the batch file from the bottom of the first post here, thats exactly what it is for and all that it’s for. Cleanup commands.


A little patience will be needed and don’t do anything else whilst it is running.
Check the command window when it is finished, see if it found any errors.

Make sure you don’t close it until the end. It should say “Press any key to continue” which closes the command prompt window. But read the results first.

You could also try and re-register the Start menu Shell experience packages.
Worth a shot.

  • Right-click the Start button (or press Windows key + X).
  • Select Terminal (Admin).
  • Paste the command below into the Windows Terminal window (click on to copy):
  • Get-appxpackage -all *shellexperience* -packagetype bundle |% {add-appxpackage -register -disabledevelopmentmode ($_.installlocation + “\appxmetadata\appxbundlemanifest.xml”)}
  • Hit Enter and let the process complete.

Try restarting Windows background services:​

  • Head to the Task Manager (via a right-click of the Start button or pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del).
  • Switch to the Details tab, and track down the respective service, starting with StartMenuExperienceHost.exe.
  • Right-click it, and select End task. A warning message will pop up.
  • Click End process to confirm
  • Reboot
If restarting StartMenuExperienceHost.exe failed to fix your problems with the Start menu, repeat the process with the following background services:
  • SearchIndexer.exe
  • SearchHost.exe
  • RuntimeBroker.exe

Still no joy?

Update or reinstall your Graphics Driver​

If all fails, I would suggest trying a different user account to see if the problems you are facing persist.

I'm just starting to play now. An interesting observation: the funkiness occurs only when I (Administrator) am logged in. When logged in under my wife's account (non-Administrator), all is fine.

You can create a new user account and make it an admin account but I can’t help you to migrate your old profile stuff.

I ended up deleting my account and then re-creating it. Worked like a charm. Thank you to all who helped.
